Hi fellow diabetics. I am 68 and I was diagnosed Type 2 only six months ago. It gave me a shock and I reduced sugar and other bad carbs right away. I have since lost 5 kgs, and my first check-up last week showed an HbA1c of 5.5%. My doctor was pleased and told me to keep doing what I'd been doing. (I'm on Metformin GA 500mg twice daily, but often forget after breakfast, so mostly end up taking only one after dinner. My bad, didn't 'fess up to the doc!)
4 months ago I had a spinal fusion/laminectomy which has allowed me to do more walking. (I had been housebound for over a year waiting for the operation, preceded by years of limited exercise, so my legs were pretty weak.) The numbness in my lower legs and feet I had blamed on the nerves in my back being pinched. (Now released by the laminectomy at L4/L5.) So the numbness should have improved but has not.
Is this neuropathy? And can this be reversed with time if I keep my diabetes well controlled? Will walking help? (I can't do any other exercise, eg. bending, lifting weights, for another 3 months)
Also, coming down from 13% to 5.5% in 6 months seems a little extreme. Could either one of the readings been wrong? Any wisdom would be appreciated. Thanks!
