Hello. It was just to say that things have got no better, in fact they took a turn for a worse on thursday night as bloods and ketones rising. I probably did go into panic mode and after checking blood gases etc and speaking to the endocrinologist/diabetes specialist i was sent some with my pump on 180% and 3 additional units by pen (had already taken 2). My stool sample and initial blood tests are clear so this is what were left with:-

1) I have been on a long term anti biotic for over 2 months for a skin infection - GP told me to stop this on Thursday in case it was aggravating my bowel/gut and giving me the problems. I've stopped them but still having problems but I guess they'll take a few days to come out of my system?
2) I have been stressed recently (different personal issues) and wonder if this is what causing the erratic/elavated numbers - I am a worrier and have seen my BSs go up during stressful times but never like this and not for over 2 weeks.
3) Some other gut issue.
4) A pump malfunction that's not showing up. My replacement holiday (!!!) pump is arriving on Tuesday so I've to try it. I don't think it is related to the pump because of the stomach issues I'm getting though.
5) Steel cannula sets also arriving on Tuesday.

Strange thing was i managed to get numbers down to 5.6 going to bed last night and they stayed constant until 6am.

Interesting went to bed lat night and s

Hi Riri,
firstly sorry to hear about your gut problems. Have you tried some probiotics, they might help get the good bacteria going again. (Can be found in health food shops)
Personally I think if you haven't done so you need to do some basal testing. Then you can see what is going on.

You say you have a spare pump coming on Tues plus the steel cannulas............ perhaps try the steel cannula with your present pump 1st. Then you will know if it's your cannulas causing the problem. If you try the cannulas with the replacement pump you wont know where the problem lies.

Hia carbs rocks - my only problem with basal testing now is that I have to be continually on a temp basal to keep my numbers from going above 15 and more probably. Would you not agree that it's a difficult time to do it? Thanks

If you have been on a temp basal for 2 weeks then yes it's time to test most def.
You know that your basal is up by 180% so set up another profile working with 180% more than what you call normal now. Then work from there. It's quite simple to do and will save you a lot of hassel in the long run.
Carbs R ok.

Hi

If your bg levels get back to normal for the morning, then that time onwards would be a good to start basal testing without eating any food. Make yourself up a couple of bowls of sugar free jelly to eat instead of carb and then just test your bg level every hour. Once you can see how your bg changes you can then alter the basals up or down and then re do the basal test the following day to see how the changes have affected your bg levels. You may thought have to repeat the basal testing depending on how much of a change you have made to the rates.

Sometimes it can be a matter of changing the basals and also changing the carb ratio. If you dont want to do any basal testing then use 180% TBR to see if the increase in basal brings your bg levels down and if it does, then you'll know then that you need to do some basal testing and that its probably not the pump or infusion set that is at fault and that you could create another programme or profile on the pump and just use the 180% increase in basals and copy them over.

So sorry Riri you are still going through a rough time. I hope you can things more settled soon and there will be a glimmer of light at the end of that tunnel. Sending you (((((((((hugs))))))))))) With very good wishes RRBx

Thanks for all the posts - it really helps to know that people are out there :D

Day 3 off the antibiotics and less stomach issues (no gurgling or so much bloating) and numbers have been under 10 all day albeit on a temp basal of 140% since 10.30am. Sugars last might dropped to below 4.5 twice !! Would have been nervous to see these numbers in the night previously but I was chuffed last night. No rise after getting up either and sat down to breakfast at 9am with my BS at 6
I realy hope that this will continue and it is the ABs that have played havoc with my gut which has impacted on my BSs. Think I'll allow myself a small smilie :)
