Healthcare company Roche has announced it will join Medtronic in providing support for people with diabetes who use Animas insulin pumps. Last year Animas Corp, a division of Johnson &Johnson, announced it was closing operations and exiting the insulin pump business. Animas, which was the second-largest manufacturer of insulin pumps, told all its customers in January this year that it was ceasing manufacturing of their pumps with immediate effect in the UK and Ireland. To ensure its 90,000 customers received support during the transition, Animas selected Medtronic whose insulin pumps include the Animas Vibe and OneTouch Ping. Medtronic, the developers of the MiniMed 640G have since been providing support to customers to ensure they are able to stay on insulin pump therapy. Now Roche, which is based in Switzerland, will too provide support for former Animas customers. According to type 1 diabetes charity JDRF, Roche will offer their Accu-Chek Combo or Accu-Chek insight insulin pump system for £995 with a full four-year warranty, subject to terms and conditions. If you are using an Animas pump, you can continue to use it with the support of either Medtronic or Roche. When you are eligible for a new pump, your insulin pump team on the NHS will be able to help you choose which new pump is right for you. You can consult your diabetes team if you are interested in transferring your insulin pump care and support to Roche, or if have any other questions regarding your current insulin pump care. Benedict Jephcote, Editor of Diabetes.co.uk, said: "With Roche offering their support, this provides more choice to people with type 1 diabetes who are currently using Animas pumps. There are now two companies that can provide support and to help with the transition to a new pump on the future."
