I've just got back from ain week Hong Kong. I've been low carbing for a month or so beforehand and my levels were near perfect. It was impossible for me to low carb out there for various reasons - in a large group with kids, not wanting to be difficult, not knowing the place or any restaurants and not a great deal of Western food. Plus it was 40 degrees and 90% humidity, which I'm sure messed my metabolism up a bit.

I had loads of results in the teens and averaged the week at 11 mmol/l - I'm amazed it wasn't higher. I've got an hba1c in a few weeks which I'm now dreading. Anyway, just wanted to offload. Anyone got any advice?

Cheers

Yes forget about last week and move on Sam :)

although they claim the HBa1C covers the average sugar levels for the previous three months, the majority of the level shown is for that of just the last three or four weeks... so get your act back together and they might not even know about your blow outs... :)

I have been there and done that.

I spent a month in Spain (I do it twice a year still) and found it difficult to low carb. Last year I had an HbA1c two weeks after getting back, it was still only 5.3%. I did pig out on a couple of occasions but I tried mostly to eat stuff that was not so bad. I now take a stock of tinned and dried food and eat plenty of vegetables.

I wouldn't worry to much, you will probably find your HbA1c is going to be OK.

For medical reasons only I was forced to drink red wine most evenings, it must have worked!

Well, learn how to carb count properly - obvious ways are DAFNE (if it's available in your area) or BDEC (free but requires registration). You cannot treat T1 diabetes with a low carb diet alone regardless of what Dr Bernstein thinks.

If your average is 11 mmol/l, you need more insulin.

All will be well...we all slip up once in a while but the most important thing is knowing when we do, getting up, dusting ourselves and moving on...just keep doing the right thing :D

Hi Sam,

I know what you mean! I was on holiday week before last (only in this country), but change in routine, eating in coffee shops that didn't have any low-carb options, taking basal late, eating at odd times etc etc played havoc with my BG. Last week, back at home and back to my usual routine and diet, I had hypos and highs galore with no apparent reason (even saw a 13 at one point  ) and I am still on higher than usual Apidra doses. Fortunately, my BG is now stabilising again, but it's still not normal. HbA1c next week and I'm dreading it :(

Just get back to normal as soon as possible and put it behind you!

Hi All.
You are not alone - I too have had few months of wacky yo-yoing BG levels
last 3-4 months with the errattic close/muggy weather.
Am due an HbA1c check and am nervous as to what the result will be as
had raised BG levels despite continueing with my eating plan and insulin therapy!
I simply cant afford to take my eye off the ball now...
As 'know' things have been differing of late!
Was up to 19.8 other day so annoying and frustrating :x
It does feel 'beyond' my control somedays!!!!!
Fed up Anna.

Thanks for your posts everyone. Sorry to whinge about it, but it got me down. After the carbs/weather/routine change on holiday, my Lantus has shot up from 6 units to 16, which explains the rubbish sugar levels. Now I'm back in my routine, I was able to figure this out.

Brennan, I've carb counted for a while now. I know that most portions of chips have about 60g of carbs, burger buns have about 30, a bowl of pasta about 75g.

Smidge, sounds like you've had exactly the same problems as me! I reckon once I've put my lantus up tonight, I should be back to normal. Let's hope the hba1c doesn't suffer to much!
