Basically in Aug 2015 a regular annual blood test (pre-diabetes) was 6.2% and I was then warned that I was close to the 6.5% threshold that triggers T2D. In March 2016 we celebrated our 50th anniversary and spent 2 weeks in Barbados. Here we were on an all-inclusive basis and naturally we were drinking plenty of rum cocktails. These never struck us as being that strong in alcohol but were certainly sweet. We also visited a couple of rum distilleries which we sampled. On my return in April 2106 I had another blood test and here I was told my sugars were 6.7% and I had T2D. I was put on 2 x 500mg Metformin and started a low carb diet which has resulted in losing 20 lbs in 12 weeks. (14st 9.25lbs - > 13st 3.75lbs). My next blood test was this month and the blood sugars are 5.9% (41) and my medication has been reduced 1 x 500mg per day. I have had feet feeling test and eye diabetic screening which are 100%.
Could the excess of cocktails have caused the April 6.7% figure I wonder. So far I haven’t mentioned this to my doctor as I didn’t think it was relevant. I understand that once you are diabetic you are always diabetic unless I am told otherwise.
