Hi All

Just a quick thread because over the last few weeks I have been very busy at work, as a result I do not have adequate time to eat my lunch.

I found that if I use my normal carb counting for breakfast I will begin to be hungry around 12 noon, but I have reduced my Humalog at breakfast and around lunch time I am 11mmol and not hungry. I am wondering whether this is safe to do.

If it is not safe what is the best strategy of missing a meal?

Thanks

Joe

Hi @poacher_joe

Are you on a basal/bolus insulin regime? If so, you should be able to miss meals with no problem and you shouldn't need to reduce boluses for your breakfast. Cutting your breakfast insulin so you're 11 at lunch isn't a good idea, in my opinion, as high BS damages the body and makes you feel rough.

I know you've said you're busy, but if it was me, I'd find time for a small lunch or at least a reasonable snack to ward off any hunger. Or I'd simply put up with the hunger if I had to. I wouldn't be happy running my BS high like that.

What job do you do? Do you not get a lunch break?

If you can't skip a meal without being hypo your basal (background) insulin is probably too high.

Are you on MDI? If so, your basal will be something like Levemir or Lantus and you'll only inject that insulin once or twice a day.

To see if your basal is correct you would do basal testing https://mysugr.com/basal-rate-testing/
