Sandwiches

Crisp lettuce can make a wrap, fill it with whatever you fancy.

I used to have a piece of cheese, walnuts and olives.

For snacks I used to weigh out 30g of peanuts, but you need to check your blood to test. They are fine for me. And don't eat the honey roast ones!

i have problems with small quantities of things like nuts. If I buy a packet of nuts i would almost certainly finish the whole packet.

Due to my bingeing problem i have to try to restrict myself to quantities that make a single serving. if i do have buy a whole packet of something, i end up having a battle with myself about whether I should throw out what i don't need.

It makes me feel like I'm trying to juggle with one hand tied behind my back.

Inchindown, I'm fortunate not to have a binge eating disorder, but I can agree that nuts can be rather moreish.

Because I'm gluten-free, I tend to roast and flavour my own nuts, then seal them into portion sized bags. Would something like that work for you?

When we all started on this journey, most of us felt as though we had one hand tied behind our back. I don't have a binging disorder, certainly I felt as though I was being a pig at times. Please be aware, I am not trying to belittle your binging.

A few months before I was diagnosed, I started buying 2lt bottles of coke, not drunk in 30 odd years. I drank it by the pint. I was buying multipacks of salt and vinegar chipsticks. Again not bought for over 30 years. I was eating at least 4 packets at a time.

Was. I binging? I don't know. My body must have been screaming out for something that these products had.

I gave up the coke before I was diagnosed. The chipsticks went as soon as I have as diagnosed.

When I broke the carb addiction, no more snacking, I don't crave these foods. I am a lot happier with my food choices, my clothes size is decreasing, I have a bit more energy, my knees are not giving out on me when I tackle the stairs.

If they could offer me a cure tomorrow, I wouldn't go back to my old way of eating.

are you getting any professional help for your binge eating disorder?

Thanks for the suggestion, but I have a major problem just having certain foods in the house. So I just don't buy these things.

It's not just nuts either. For instance if I was to buy a box of cornflakes, I would eat bowl after bowl until either the cornflakes or milk ran out. So my breakfast is limited to porridge, yogurt or scrambled eggs as I've learned I can't eat more than one portion of those at a time.

I saw a psychiatrist a couple of years ago and she referred me to a psychologist for cognitive behavioural therapy, but I've heard nothing since then.

I tried to get private CBT treatment, but all the therapists in my area were booked for years.

I tried to get help from my GP, but on 2 occasions I was told not to waste their time. They didn't believe a man in his sixties could have an eating disorder. So I've had to try to find my own strategies to deal with the problem.

You are doing awesome.

Do you have any self referral counselling in your area? I only ask as I'm in Bedford and I know we do.

Ps home bargins sell the pub size packs of peanuts for about 10 or 20p - not sure if that would help as you eat the portion?

@Inchindown - Have you had a look at the link below? There may just be something there to help you. The second link could help identify a service/support group near, or relatively to you. If you were to contact your nearest group, they may know of other groups around. Sometimes peer support groups don't find themselves listed on these directories.

Are you in the UK? you can self refer - google IAPS for your area. all the best.

I would disagree about ditching the bread, you are getting good bg numbers when you test, plus you are losing weight and controlling your binge eating, keep doing what you are doing because it is working.

If weight loss stalls or bg numbers rise then you can think about lowering your carb intake.

Very impressive progress, you are amazing!

That will depend a lot on what triggers binge eating for the OP.
If, like me, it's carbs then ditching them completely will be of enormous benefit so the bread should go.. if not then the OP can consider what they like to have in the house.
Personally I have found far better control now I have overcome my addiction to carbs (especially bread) than ever before.

The OP can eat some carbs, this is a reply to a post :- Thanks for the suggestion, but I have a major problem just having certain foods in the house. So I just don't buy these things.

Hi @Inchindown and welcome, have you tired googling for support forums regarding eating disorder's, you would get good advice, possible control techniques and of course the much needed support ?
Aplogises if you have already done this.

"sigh"

He mentioned cornflakes, so they are a big no, no

I'm not entirely sure where my bingeing comes from.

It could be from when I was a kid. I come from a poor family where there was no guarantee there would be food on the table when I got home from school. So there was a tendency to wolf down any food that was available.

I spent 18 months in hospital when I was 20. I spent my 21st and 22nd birthday in hospital where I nearly lost a leg. I started putting on weight while I was in hospital. Eating junk food helped pass the time back then.

In 1994 I had to take early retirement due to complications with my leg from the accident I had when I was younger. It may be I started eating more after I stopped working.

As I've gotten older, I've found it harder to keep my hobbies going and my physical fitness has diminished over the years. It may be that I'm using junk food as comfort food. If it wasn't for my little Jack Russell I probably wouldn't get much exercise at all.

So whether it was one, or all, of those things. I think it might be too late for me to to dive into therapy to find out. If I can use my recent heart problems to sustain my present break from bingeing, then that would seem to me to be my best option for now.

Going back to the OP, so you had two different responses to 2 different sandwiches which supposedly have the same amount of carbs, but on two different days - that is the most likely reason for the BG result discrepancies, but I'd also go along with the cheese fat delaying things slightly too.

Every Diabetic knows two days are never the same - no matter how hard you try to keep them the same!

You are doing great though!
