Sausages

I am dabbling with lowering carb intake, I am still up around 150 per day but that is significantly reduced for me.

Anyway I like Sausages and have noticed how high teh carb content is in some of them. I have also found that Bratwurst while not tasting exactly the same as a good old british banger seem to be down around the 0.1-0.2g per 100g of carbs, so have been enjoying some of those. Alsi and Asda are I think very tasty.

All I need now is a low carb receipe for my butcher to make up and I will be very happy!

Hi,

I also like the bratwurst and frankfurtas. I havce found a brand called Black Farmer which are low in carbs. Also ive noticed some Gluten free sausages are pretty low carb too.

Try biltong - its dried meat and is a lovely snack. I usually buy mine from a company called Susmans who do it mail order. Not cheap, but is my Christmas treat whilst everyone indulges in chocs and crips.

Try and purchase sausages with a minimum meat content of 80-90%, some supermarket brands such as The Black Farmer and Debbie & Andrews have a high meat content and are roughly around 1-2g of carb per sausage.

The main reason for low carb in gluten free sausages is that to go GF they need to remove the rusk/filler and it is cheaper/easier to replace it with meat.

Morrison's do Toulouse sausages, full of garlic and herbs and have less than 1g or carbs per sausage and they are sooo tasty!

I like Black farmers and they also do Black farmers daughter which are smaller also low in carbs I tried some other gluten free sausages but they had no taste and they were filled with fat which I normally dont mind but these splattered the whole grill and grill pan with fat so I think nearly all the meat content was fat I ate some sausages when out (no other choice ) they were suposed to be "butchers best" but they spiked my BGs to over 14 !

I buy Frankfurters in a glass jar from LIDL, which is practically carb free. I also buy "bangers". I read the nutrition labels in Waitrose and I have found some Cumberland sausages that are pretty low in carbs. Different varieties of bangers vary hugely.Just read the panel!

I used to love Sausage Casserole containing lots and lots of vegatables, very tasty, warming and it just cooks away in the oven :)

Now that I have Coeliac disease, I tried some GF sausages from Morrisons, they were horrible and the casing was like chewing a balloon, really chewy and unpleasant  .

The main reason why gluten free sausages are GF is because Coeliacs cannot eat Gluten, Wheat, Rye and Barley, its not easier or cheaper to replace with more meat, its actually because even the tiniest amount can make Coeliacs very sick  I have now found sausages from Asda that are quite tasty, but the carb is 9.7 per 100g, so not any good for you I'm afraid. M&S do gluten free sausages - they don't do special ones, most of their regular range are gluten free. They taste good too,
