Scared and Confused!

Hi everyone

I'm new to this site and really need advice on how to get started on a low carb diet. I am type 2 diagnosed when I was 20. Started on Metformin but gave me a dodgy tum. Progressed to insulin when I was 27 and have steadily gained weight since.

Have always followed the advice of low fat / low sugar and it's getting me nowhere. HBA1c is 8.1 which is still too high (it was 18 when first diagnosed) and I now weigh 18 stone and am morbidly obese. Not good for a 5ft 2 shortie like me.

I think my diabetes nurse is giving me duff info and I need to seriously try low carbing as an alternative. But I am addicted to carbs I think and just don't know how to get started or how to cope.

I would appreciate any help or advice as I am desperate to find a solution. But so far haven't had enough courage to ditch the toast and try it. I need someone to help me find low carb alternatives to my usual fayre!

Thank you. :)

Hi Toastlover ,and welcome to the forum. Please have a good read, especially in the low carb forum and you will pick up some good advice there.Start cutting down the carbs slowly ,reduce eating, bread, pasta ,rice and potatoes and all flour based products.Take it slowly, now you have decided to do this you need to be comfortable with what you are eating because this is a diet for life not for just a little while.
Do you have a blood test monitor? Test before a meal and two hours after to see the affect that meal has had on you.Keep a food diary as well and you will soon see which foods affect you the most.

Hi toastlover,

Get yourself a copy of Charles Clark's 'The Diabetes Revolution' and that'll get you started. Read it while you tuck in to bacon 'n eggs for breakfast and you're on the first steps to weight loss and better health. Good luck.
