Scary Readings!

I have only been diagnosed for 6 weeks now and have decided to test. My BG levels are normally good - between 4.6 and 5.6, but today my pre-breakfast was 7.8 and 2 hours after 8.1. I really don't understand why they have risen so much. The only change to my diet has been that I have cut out bread, cereals, pasta, pototos and rice completely out of my diet, but surely that's a good thing? So confused and concerned. Any advice would be welcomed x

When did you take your pre-breakfast reading? Had you just got up, or had you been up a while pottering about, and was it actually a fasting test or had you had a bite or a drink before hand?

Yes, a very good thing to have cut out those bad carbs and that will help enormously, but there are other foods you need to take care with such as milk, fruit, things made with flour, certain vegetables.

Could be dawn syndrome!
Other than that you are doing really well.

I am with Bluetit. I have found that if I do not measure my fasting number rather immediately on rising and before doing other things (except, of course, for that quick bathroom visit), I will find higher numbers than expected. This also applies if I have had a bad night's sleep - or not enough sleep.

And yes, as Bluetit says, there are other foods than the obvious ones to watch - especially all things containing flour and, of course, sugar - for example, I was amazed at seeing the amount of carbs in e.g. tomato ketchup and some salad dressings.

Good thing that you have gotten on to a good start, though. It may, however, take some time to get consistent numbers. Diabetes is sometimes - or rather: often - unpredictable. Even when I think that I have got a handle on this, I will ever so often get a curve ball and think: "Now, where did that come from?"
