School administering insulin

I'd really appreciate stories/advice from anyone whose child needs insulin while at school. My little girl (type 1, diagnosed in March) has just started this week. It is a small village school, they have no nurse. The plan was that I would go in and train her teachers how to test her, look out for and treat hypos and give her insulin but so far after 3 days I'm really upset and not confident they are going to be able to look after her properly.

I've been going into school at morning break to test her so I can build up a better picture of how school is going to affect her levels, then at lunch to test her and give her insulin. There has only been a teacher available to watch her tests twice and her insulin once! They just seem too busy to take the time out for me to teach them and yesterday she had a hypo! She was 5.5 at break when I tested her and left on the understanding she was having an apple and milk which would have been fine but she ended up having just the apple and so, hypo!

We're now having a meeting next week, which is great and hopefully things will become better after it but I'm really concerned about her insulin injection. We cannot guarantee she will eat everything she is given as she is only 4 so I am not going to be the one calculating her insulin which worries me. Does anyone else calculate insulin after meals like this? I'd love some advice. So far I've written down the carbs amount for each item in her lunch box so that they would then be able to use the full totals or halve/quarter them etc if she leaves anything but I don't know if this is too much to expect them to do. ah I'm rambling now, sorry - very stressed out about this!

Hi my son is type one diabetic he is 7 yrs old and like your daughter goes to a village school with no nurse when he was first diagnosed i used to go in to school each lunch time to administer his insulin. now it is done by the school my sons diabetic nurse went in to school and trained a number of teachers and TA's the school can actually claim some money from the goverment for doing this your diabetic nurse should be helping you in this with advice and so on.

Hello pianomum...
You are a worried "mum" and not rambling at all ((((hug))))
Could you ask at your GP/DSN for any extra outside school help?
Enquire about funding or healthcare help/training for the school you and your little girl .
As well as teachers assistants , chat with the head of school maybe?
See what options are available for you all .
It will be so worrying and stressful for you I understand ...
As she is your precious child and when she is in school will never be far from your thoughts.
Please keep asking all the questions you need to the healthcare professionals and the head of school till
someone gives you the help you need.
Also here - we have parents of kiddies that will help support both you and your daughter.
Ask anything you feel or need to ...
Please do let us all know how things progress with you both.
Much love and thoughts.
Anna.

Pianomum,

As well as the advice you will receive here you could also contact the JDRF for advice on this matter, here's a link to their site:
