School trips

Hi my DS aged 10 was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes 2 weeks ago. He has been in back in school for a week. The diabetic nurse went in last week to give some education about diabetes. The nurse was supposed to have gone into school today to teach staff how to supervise my son giving his insulin.
My son self injects and checks BMs 4 times a day. His control is reasonably good. He has had no hypos.
The nurse who went to school today did not teach the staff how to supervise him giving insulin as "she didn't know why she was supposed to go to the school today".
His teacher has a wife with type 1 diabetes. He is happy to have my son in class and doing PE etc.
However there is a school trip on Friday. 9 am unti, 3pm. The school say he can't go unless me or DH can spend all day on the trp with him.
Unfortunately I have to work- I have had 5 weeks off in the last 6 weeks- my baby 9 months was on ITu and in hospital with. Meningitis for 2 weeks. Then my DS was diagnosed with diabetes 2 weeks ago. I spent time off work in hospital with him.
I cannot ate this Friday off for a school trp at such short notice. My DH doesn't work Fridays because he looks after Dd aged 9 months and DD aged 4. Obviously they can't all go on the school trip.
My mother in law and mother are away, and we have no one else to look after our daughters.
I am going to spell to school tomorrow my an is upset at the project of missing the trip.
What is your opinion? Say it's ok for him to miss out because we can't attend. Or insist the school make arrangements for someone suitable to supervise him giving his insulin?
Don't want to be pushy but he has been amazing coing with diabetes and I don't him upset, especially as he is not unwell.
Does he disability discrimination act apply to diabetes?

Hi Lunar01,
I would go back to the school and arrange to show all the teachers that will be in contact with your son what needs to be done. At age 10 I'm sure your son is getting on quite easily with doing all his own testing and injections. It is quite easy and nothing teachers should be getting worried about. Every school has to have a first aid person and someone responible for first aid on trips as well. It would take 15 mins to explain what to do when he has to inject and what to do if he goes low etc. I would also leave clear instructions in his testing kit make sure he has a hypo stop kit with him and that you can easily be contacted. I can't see a problem with him going on a trip especially as he's looking forward to it. Try going back to school and thouroughly explaining everything don't get upset with them but be firm. I hope he gets to go. Good Luck Laura

Thanks for replying Laura. I have been to school today. He can go on the trip but his teacher is nervous in case he has a hypo despite having had 2 sessions of teaching with the diabetic nurse. He has a hypo kit. The school are saying it is because he has only been diagnosed a short time.
As a compromise my husband will take my baby and toddler with him at lunchtime- watch Luke inject and then come home.
At least he gets to go! Phew , as this had been the only time I have seen him upset about the diabetes

Hi to u and am nearly 2 years into this. My daughter diagnosed at 10 and I have to say school and diabetes team were very good. A risk Assesment has to b done for every child, just a bit more in depth for yours. At my daughters school 1 teacher took responsibility for her, at her instigation we swapped mobile numbers and she would ring or txt about anything she not sure of.
Your child should not miss out...the children with other problems don't !! Your diabetes nurse sounds like she needs to get her a**e in gear, she should be encouraging the staff at school to be positive and encouraging them to be involved. ( I'm still in touch with the teacher who mostly dealt with my daughter and she has just had another child in her class diagnosed..told me can't believe how confident she is now!!)
My daughter started high school this time,a whole new bag of worms, but I can say she never missed out on any of school life. At the end of year 6 she went on a 4 day residential all outward bound stuff and loved every minute.
Sorry for going on but from my experience there is no need for them to miss anything and as it sounds like your child is dealing v well ( like mine did ) there is no need. I would speak to nurses and school ASAP. Good luck

My 7yr old went on a school trip two weeks after being diagnosed. His carer at school was quite happy to go with him but had hospital herself that day so school insisted someone else went with him. Luckily i was able to swap shifys at work but truthfully they should have a care plan in place for his diabetes regardless of being at school on a trip. (Highs and lows can happen any where.)
I would go in and talk to the school and im sure you van come to some sort of an arrangement. :)
