Second meeting with nurse and still no wiser!!

I met with a different nurse today for a 4 week check after my diagnosis. She wasn't a specialist diabetic nurse but was very pleasant. She weighed me and asked me what I was eating. Took my blood pressure, which is still high, told me to keep up the good work and see me in June!

No one has checked my feet, asked for a urine sample, explained about retesting bloods etc...

Luckily I've bought myself a metre and been monitoring myself and reading all the forums.

I feel annoyed and still a bit in a whirlwind.

It is my dr who checks my feet, not sure if it done by the nurses???

Eyes are tested at my surgery ....

It maybe as it is early days that all these things are being set up, but you might have to ask ......

I am impressed. You have met twice! My dn refused to see me again. She was so annoyed about my low carb diet that she referred me to the hospital! Accidentally put on consultants list. He was fuming with my doc and dn. Got given strips, he wrote to my doc, arranged the eye test and checked my feet. I really would ask.

The foot test and eye test are part of the NICE pathway recommendations. Your nurse should have referred you for both these tests. You need to chase this up.
My diabetes nurse checked my feet as she said there was a long wait for the podiatrist. She seemed to know what she was doing - checked the pulses and prodded me with something whilst I had my eyes closed, checking for feeling in various parts of my feet and all my toes. She has referred me for the eye test and that appointment is next week.

It's interesting to see how different treatment is all over the uk. Seems that everyone is treated differently.

I may have met the nurse twice but it was a different one each time and neither was a diabetic nurse... But this one seemed more confident in what she was telling me.

That is so right we all have different experiences and perceptions....never easy ...but keep persevering.
At the end of the day we all deserve the best care and treatment....but that just is not often the case ....
We must keep going....stay calm and fight on.....x

I saw my DN for the first time last week. She spent 40 minutes with me, mainly advice, but did the foot check. I've been referred to my own Optician for the retina check, which I've had yearly since 2000 due to a history of diabetes in my family. She gave me advice about referral to training etc on management and diet etc. She will see me again in a month as I started medication two weeks ago. She said no need to test blood unless I wanted to do so, which I have done. I've been following the advice about diet and am taking more exercise. Have shed about 2kg in weight and my average bg has gone down from 8.5 to 7. I'm hoping to reduce it further by the time I see her again. I'm quite happy with the treatment and information given so far and I can ring her on clinic days if needed and she has said that she will always answer any of my questions. Despite a busy GP practice I think that I have received reasonable treatment and hope that others receive the same, after all, the NHS is supposed to be a universal health care service and shouldn't be different from place to place.

Well done Coll,:)
Because you are self controlled, they wont detect anything or improvements etc;
I would check with your local health practice that your getting the necessary checks and request blood test results for your personnel reference ( usually cost £1.00p but well worth it to compare 4 or 6 monthly checks etc; )

Must admit these nurses have no proper training with regard to diabetes which is a shame.
You could also contact the practice manager and explain your concern regarding your situation, they may be happy to listen and act accordingly.(mind you pigs may fly).:(

I had a nurse and doctor who didn't really check me out so well and wasn't clear about the whole thing so I changed to another hospital and there they're taking care of me like I'm the last man living, lol
