Hi all
Had my second visit to the diabetic nurse yesterday (I am type 2 ) all she did was take my blood pressure weigh me and said these are her exact words
"You seam to be doing ok we will see you next year"
Is this normal for a second visit ???
 
i had the same after my second visit
i.m ok with that as i know if there is any problems then i can see my gp
 
It's a technical term, don't worry about it
However, you're entitled to know the details and on what she bases her opinion.
How long ago was your first visit to the DN? Who diagnosed you?
 
Cool thanks just felt a bit lost didn't no if that was the norm

Short answer is "yes".

Long answer is "Yes, but..."

As with many of us on here, I got myself a blood sugar meter and check regularly to see how I am fasting, ie overnight, and how different foods and drinks affect my levels. Ideally, your Diabetes Nurse will be the one to get advice from regarding such things, your key ally in the GP team. The reality is, sadly, not always so rosy...
 
3 months ago was my first visit to dn and my doctor told me I was diabetic
 
I got myself a meter so I know what I can a cannot eat now thanks

I have 2 appointments for my checks - a health assistant checks weight, blood pressure, feet and takes blood and then a week later I see the DN to discuss my results and, usually, argue as to why I should take statins and why I don't want to and why she can't prescribe test strips!
 
I get test strips prescribed by my doc he's quite good if I have any problems I will make a appointment with the dn
 
I am sent for every 6 months.I think it depends on how you are doing with BG.
I got a moniter or I would never have been able to get my BG down,if you dont test you dont know how you are doing and what you can and cant eat,and I test if I feel a bit under the weather for my peace of mind.
 
Hi. I would say it's not normal and not right. You should have been given an HBa1C test and discussed the results of the blood test. Do get hold of a meter and check your sugars 2 hours after a typical meal and if they are too high do discuss this with the DN to check that you are on the right level of medication if needed. Follow a low-carb diet.
 
I have been following a low carb diet for three months now lost 2 stone check my blood regular I will go back and see them I think and get my results as I was not told them thanks everyone
 
Hi I think it is pretty standard. On my third visit to my Dr he said "You are doing well but you will end up on insulin one day". I changed my Dr and I am off all meds and am technically no longer diabetic now. Sometimes their ignorance can be a bit hard to swallow but at least you found the forum so you are in the right place. Make sure you always ask for the results of your HbA1c and cholesterol tests as what they consider fine may not be fine with you.
 
I'm 78 and was diagnosed Type2 in 2005. Books and articles talk about 'treatment team' but every time I have annual check it seems to be a different nurse. The only thing I was told when diagnosed was "keep away from sweets and cake" ! Made an appointment to see the Diabetic nurse recently because I've neglected my diet for about 6 months or so....resulting in pins and needles in my toes when in the bath. The nurse said probably lack of vitamin B12 but didn't test. As to my high BG results she just said "Don' worry about it".
I'm beginning to despair of the medical support.
When first diagnosed I went to a support group on 3 occasions but they told me they didn't discuss each other's diabetic problems......so I didn't go again.
Have other people had similar experiences ??

Must be really tricky offering support to somebody that you know nothing about. You're in a much better place on this forum. We may not always agree but the consensus is consistent.
 
I feel I'm very lucky as, since I was diagnosed with Type 2 last year, my dn has seen me every 3 months to try to find the right combination of medication to bring my blood sugars down. We're still trying!

I was given a monitor 3 months ago when she put me onto gliclazides and fortunately get free prescriptions as I'm over 65.
