Sedation for tooth extraction

Hi all.
I recently posted that I need to have a tooth taken out and was looking for advice as it's my first tooth extraction. My dentist now wants me to have it taken out under sedation. Now I'm doubly panicked. Has anyone else had this done and any advice please?
I really don't like thought of not being in control and am a bit worried :-(

You have done well not to have had a tooth extraction before. I can't help as I've only ever had numbing injections at the dentist. Never had to have sedation. Good luck.
 
Hi, did the dentist say why he wanted to sedate you, that's seems unnecessary ? I had two teeth out in June, both side by side and only numbing injection. I would ask why he wants to use sedation and then just refuse if you are concerned. I'm type one as well.

It's because I have crack they can't fill and they are concerned it will break as they try and take it out.
I have a appointment with DSN Thursday so I'll check with her too.

If he's talking about true sedation, you wouldn't do anything you didn't want to; you are just in a state of sublime relaxation. If he thinks he might have a bit of a job on his hands, he may feel you'll be more comfortable, over the time required, in that state (there's rarely much recollection).

I don't have too much to add in terms of your diabetes, except to add that you seem pretty switched on, and are probably able to work out a strategy to minimise any issues on that front.

You're right I'm sure I'll be fine. Was a bit of a knee jerk reaction just to panic.
I've been type 1 for just over a year and a half so still having a few "first time" for things.

Just to reassure you, the sedation is fine to have, I had sedation when I had cataracts done this year. Still semi aware but a nice relaxed feeling whilst it was done. Do be warned though you must not drive for 24 hours afterwards. Sounds to me as your dentist is looking after your welfare.
 
firs tooth extraction, well done..........

I would have though being your first that they would jut give you the jags............there nothing to worry about..........
 
i had to have a wisdom tooth our several years ago, and i HATE going to the dentist. Well they sent me to the hospital, my consultant told me that my choice of G/A was unlikely due to me being very over weight. I was gutted. But on the day I went in to see the consultant/surgeon that would be performing the op and they went through the info confirming which tooth, who I was etc and said 'so your having G/A' to which I just agreed whilst inside was jumping for joy! When I went into the operating room the consultant was looking at my x rays and said we may as well take this one out too, I was like ok take whatever so long as I'm asleep I don't care. I just lived on Yop for a week or 2 as they were on opp sides of my mouth I struggled to chew anything! ( This was pre Diabetes, can't have Yop now)

As none of us know anything about OP's tooth or the difficulties to extract it, I can't see how you can make that judgement.
 
Take a chaperone with you and have them sit in. If there is a difficulty with this then get another dentist. A chaperone can stay in control if you tell them your fears before you go.

well, if the jag is a possibility, which it may not be, then I stick by my statement that its nothing to worry about......

Well obviously they will numb the gums as well
 
I spoke to my dentist to see why they felt I needed sedation (kind of wish I hadnt now!). Because I've had a really deep root canal and theres a crack at the tip they think it might be difficult to pull out in one piece. He said they might be rooting around for small splinters of tooth and its very close to my sinus cavity so it wont be very nice hence the sedation. Apprently they give you a vallium like drug, numb the tooth and then go digging ...eek.
Apparently you're very unlikely to remember anything about the procedure, you need someone with you to drive you home and keep an eye on you for 24 hours after. So once under then I guess I wont know much about it its just trying not to get too worried before hand and as everyone has said I'm sure it'll be ok (positive thinking eh )
