Seeking calories

Having lost over two stone in the last 6 months I now want to try to stabilise my weight - ie do not want to lose anymore.

My diet is relatively low carb (approx 60/90 per day). For reasons I won't bore you with I want to try and avoid fatty foods so bacon, sausages etc are out.

I am struggling to get enough calories per day - other than nuts (which I realise are fat) does anyone have any suggestions for food which fit the criteria of:

- no/very low carb
- not fat
- high in calories

Why not buy the Collins Gem Calorie Counter book ?
Has listings for everything you can think of with Cals/Carbs/Protein/Fat/and Fibre.
Very useful book.
Costs £3.99 from W H Smith's or other good bookshops, or on line maybe cheaper. Fits in the pocket/handbag as well.

Hi Danny

As starchy carbs and fat are the food groups that contain most calories, it will be difficult for you to up your calorie intake without also upping your carb and fat intake somewhat too. Without knowing why you're avoiding fatty foods, can I ask if that includes ALL fats or just saturated? I'm sure you will appreciate that there is a big difference between the fats contained in bacon and sausages and the healthier fats from oily fish such as mackerel?

You could try eating more of the following:

lean poultry i.e. chicken, turkey

oily fish such as mackerel, sardines etc

quorn or soya based foods if you like them - for example, I use a vegemince that has 176kcal/100g but only 3g of carbs and 0.7g of saturated fat.

Avocados, seeds and nuts

Hummus

You could also try adding small amounts of complex carbs to your diet, such as oatcakes, and see what effect they have on your BG control. Many people find that once they have good diabetic control, they can tolerate a small increase in carbs without any great difference to their overall control.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the replies so far.

I will take a look at the book suggested.

I should have said it is saturated fat I want to avoid (for the time-being at least).

I have a vague memory of somewhere reading that a tablespoonful of olive oil can be beneficial. You could try cod or halibut liver oil capsules or evening primrose oil capsules. OR how about coconut oil? It's quite saturated, but lots of claims are made for its health giving properties.

I've been playing with coconut oil. Usually I use creamed coconut. Couldn't find the oil anywhere until it was pointed out that it actually comes in a jar not a bottle (duh!) it's almost solid at room temperature.

Try this

the combination of coconut and almond is a winner

Not all dietitians are created equal

Hahahahahaha

Ooooh coconut oil is as saturated as they come (but then again I cook with lard and butter too LOL),I've got 12 jars under the stairs LOL I use it in coffee when I need an energy boost. Really helped my transition into low carbing. need to start off small though, otherwise you'll be on the toilet a lot!
