Hi everyone, im new here.
I’m having awful stomach cramps then diarrhoea after eating on this semaglutide. I have been on it two months. I do want to persevere with it as am obese due to steroids for adrenal insufficiency.
Because of the diarrhoea I’m unable to take my metformin.
When I last ordered my prescription the chemist said there was a manufacturing problem and can’t source it! Anyone else had this? I’m now on day 6 without any but still having the stomach cramps and diarrhoea after eating it’s relentless. I’m drinking electrolytes but a bit worried how long I can go on like this. Does it eventually go away? Has it caused me to have IBS I wonder as I’m still getting it without any for 6 days.

Hi, did you have any side effects with metformin? You’ve described my symptoms when I started it and had to swap to the slow release metformin, I still had a little bit of a grumbly tummy but as long as I had food with it I was ok and it settled after a couple of weeks, now I have no symptoms. Sorry I can’t comment on the semaglutide. Talk to your diabetic nurse as there are lots of other diabetic medications you can try that you might tolerate better.

Hi thanks for reply. No I have actually been very lucky with the metformin, I have been on it for a year since diagnosis and never really felt any different being on it. Do people contact the diabetic nurse often? I haven’t ever called her.

You should certainly consult your GP or DN. Ring your practise, ask for an appointment about your medication,

Laura, Semaglutide has a half life of 7 days, so it can take a while longer than that to be completely out of your system. Easy for me to say, but I'd urge you not to be too concerned about it quite yet.

If it continues, then it makes sense to speak to your GP or whoever you see for your diabetes.

If your Semaglutide remains unavailable, you should be letting your GP/Nurse know you can't collect your meds. They need to know, just in case they feel the need to offer you an alternative.
