Good afternoon

I wondered if you could help. My partner has recently been told he has diabetes, his Hba1ac came back 82.

I noticed he is being tested for other things via the Diabetes clinic at his surgery.

One I noticed is the above test, after googling it (I know I shouldn’t) it seems this test is for Pancreatic Cancer.

Now I am worried they are testing him for this.

To be honest, I would urge you to view that he is being tested as a positive. It is much more likely they are being thorough, but best done, especially if your partner has been unwell, or lost a lot of weight in the run up to his diagnosis.

I suspect this is a standard test for someone who is newly unexpectedly diagnosed.
If his blood sugars are high, he may be insulin resistant (type 2) or his pancreas is not producing enough (or any) insulin.
If the latter, this may be because the body has attacked itself (Type 1 is an autoimmune condition) or there is something else wrong with the pancreas (Type 3c).
I think it is fantastic that they are investigating this. It is important to know to treat correctly.
People can live for decades with well managed Type 1, 2 or 3c.

(There are other types of diabetes such as MODY but this is rarer than the others. I believe tests for MODY are only done when the others do not fit.)
