I have a question about hypoglycemia. I am diabetic for almost forty years and for a few years I had diabetes burnout and gained a substantial amount of weight. In order to lose that weight, I dieted down to a very low weight with severe carbohydrate restriction. I went from taking insulin and glucotrol to only 500 mg of glucophage. Yesterday I ate something inappropriate and my blood sugar zoomed to 425. I woke up early this morning with a 325 and treated it with 5mg of glucotrol. I quickly went down to 50 and had severe hypoglycemia. I am worried that during the evening this will happen again if I eat low carb. How long does glucotrol work? Will I need to keep my blood sugars higher throughout the day so I don't go low like that? I was very symptomatic and shaking with little ability to think. TIA

Hi and welcome. Glucotrol is one of the sulfonyl ureas similar to Gliclazide and Diamicron. It stimualtes the pancreas to produce more insulin so can cause hypos if the pancreas is still working fairly well. I wonder what you mean by diabetes burn-out? If you are still overweight you may want to talk to the doc about increasing the Metformin and keeping the Glucotrol down with slightly increased carbs to get the BS balance under better control. The sulfonyl drugs tend to last for up to 10 hours roughly

Hi, thanks for your reply. I had diabetes burnout ....known as getting tired of the constant vigilance it takes to have good blood sugar control. After forty years of this it gets very tedious. I am now very thin and probably could stand to gain a few pounds but when I do, my blood glucose readings escalate. It is difficult to have moderation ....
