I need to put on a few pounds in weight so wondered if a Whey protein shake once a day as well as my normal meals would be a good idea.
I have looked at the meal replacement shakes like Slim Fast but find they all contain quite lot of sugar I thought they would have artificial sweetener in them so would the whey protein be better

Depends on your renal function, as a high protein load puts a strain on the kidneys.

Have you thought about eating more fat (natural ones such as butter, cream, coconut). Search for posts by Carty (Carol) as she has this problem.

I am not a low carber but I have eliminated the starchy carbs including root vegetables apart from one slice of wholemeal toast with my breakfast I normally have a low fat diet so to eat more fat goes right against what I have been doing for the last nearly nine years. However I have bought some butter and have that on my leafy vegetables and I add it to cauliflower and celeriac mash also some double cream which I have been having with berries and sugar free jelly... that just felt so naughty.... I am having bacon and eating more eggs and I do like ham and salami but don't know if that is good. My main meals are mostly chicken not keen on other meat except venison which I love when I can get some

I have a routine kidney function test every 6 months or so.
So I'm ok with protein.
I don't low carb either, but I'm much the same diet. I guess I'll introduce un saturated fats in a small quantity if I need to, maybe some cheese, more fish, but I'll still avoid processes food like bacon and salami.

My kidney function test in October was fine.
I really thought bacon was ok as I think quite a lot of the low carbers have it with eggs for breakfast ..pity if it is not as I was quite enjoying it again after years of not having it

It's ok, I just try to avoid any processed food, and cured bacon and salami are really just a personal choice.
If you like it, eat it.
