Shielding letter - all Type 1s?

Hi,

I got an email today from the NHS saying I need to shield as they have expanded who needs to shield. I'm a bit surprised to be honest as my only health issue is that I have type 1 diabetes and I don't fall into any other risk categories.

I'm female, aged 32, fairly active, BMI of 24, last Hba1c 6.8, white... so I don't fit the age/ overweight/ BAME risk prolifiles. Are they just telling all Type 1 diabetics to shield now?!
 
No they aren't, I'm older than you, also female, in the correct weight band - though now verging on the upper edge of it. HbA1c slightly lower but not by too much (as of November) and I've not been told to shield.

There is some speculation is may also be dependent on where you live
 
I'm 34. Type 1. Very low HbA1c. In range BMI.
Also got a letter today.
Was very surprised.
Wonder how many of us type 1s will be told to shield now. It's was totally unexpected at this stage.
 
On the other hand I've also got my vaccine booked in for next weekend 27th Feb, which seems surprisingly early.

I knew being Type 1 I'd be in the next band to get the vaccine, but since there's over 7 million people in the 'High risk adults' group I was expecting it to take a while to be invited along.

Maybe I'm just at much greater risk than I though I was(!)
 
I'm T1 and underweight but my previous doctor taken hb1c was 8.6 which was in February last year! Not had another one not my yearly eyes screening as they kept delaying it. Now it's in April for screening. Started on CGM and estimated level by dexcom says 7.4 at moment for past month.

Live in London and just got shielding email today!
 
I’m type 1 diabetic and Hba1c of 5.6%, got my email earlier today as well. I do know of a few other t1d also received letters x
 
I’m type 1 and never got any email although my partner did who has a different condition. Rates here are quite high aswell.
 
I’m T1DM, 40, female, Caucasian, bmi in range. Bil other health issues. Relatively fit/healthy No bloods/eye screening taken in over a year due to covid. I'm also a nurse and midwife and have worked throughout despite contact with covid positive patients/women. Not received anything about shielding. I have however had my second vaccine now (due to work) so will continue to work irrespective.

Think this maybe as a result of the Qcovid algorithm that has been tracking patients with covid19. Oxford University have produced algorithm based on age, weight, ethnicity, post code. Quite a list really. On there are about 56ish conditions and type 1 diabetes is in 8th place. Quite high up on the list.
I happen to be a 59year old type 1.

Think it’s a post code lottery ....again! I’m 58 , type 1 have had kidney failure but kidneys now at 33% function ( bearing in mind they don’t read it after 60 % ) had a heart attack with stent fitted , had operation on my lung due to empyema , oh an am a below knee amputee.no shielding letter ever , which I am glad about , however I was told by an anethetist that I am lot worse on paper than in real life . Personally I don’t think I should get a letter either but hey that’s me .
 
I haven't heard anything, I have other autoimmune conditions and I'm overweight but have pretty much been shielding since March anyway
 

Hmm yes it seems like it could be the postcode lottery, I'm registered in a fairly dodgy postcode in Brixton (not that there's many non-dodgy postcodes in Brixton!).
 
It’s a strange set up, I’m in the north east so quite a highly affected area. I’m now on a pump with a predicated a1c of 47% (6.5) but on my last blood test it was 83 (9.7). So on my records I’ve got a high a1c which I think puts me into the shielding bracket, haven’t had any shield notifications throughout any of this pandemic. I’m 26 & not overweight.

Sorry if I'm being abit thick (every possibility!) Who are you getting the shielding letters from? Is it the hospital yojre registered with? Or the GP? or somewhere else. Just wondering as I've moved and registered with a new GP but unsure if I changed the address for the hospital (whoops!)

I've received my email from "nhs.shielded.patient.list@notifications.service.gov.uk". It seems to have been sent centrally from the NHS shielding programme and not directly from my GP or from the hospital where I see my diabetes specialists.

The email says they will be contacting my GP to advise them that I have been moved into this risk level and to contact my GP if I have any questions.

Hopefully if the NHS has your correct email address on file they'll send the email to you directly.
 

Yeah I asked the receptionist at my doctors about it and they said its based off NHS England rather than themselves and my docs said they did not have anything suggesting I should be shielding as of yesterday, but yeah I'm still not expecting any shielding letter anytime soon.
 
I haven’t heard anything either nor any date for a vaccine. HBA1C around 7% - nearly 50 y/o, mixed race, BMI 24 just, based in Surrey. No other conditions. Whereas a T1D friend who is younger & slimmer has a letter who lives near me! V random. ‍
 

Just goes to show what NHS England think of some ( also some GP's) and also not a lot about other's, many who actually should be shielding, so they are left to their own devices, shield and not get paid or reprimanded by employer or go on as before and take pot luck.
