Hi, I was diagnosed T2 in November of last year had various tablets but nothing brought my bg down, I'm now on insulin (NovoMix 30) twice daily, how do u lovely people go on if your shift changes from one day being on a 4-10 sleep finishing at 7am, to then be told I'm on a waking night shift which is 10pm to 7am, how do people work there insulin out as I still need it during the day but as I'm waken all night do I need to take extra as I will probably have snack breaks, this is go confusing. Apologies in advance if the answer is so obvious but I've thought long and hard about it and can't work out how this works thanks

Hi @Trish16248 and welcome to the forum.

I think the problem is with having the mixed insulin - perhaps you could explain the problem to your GP and ask him if it is possible to have separate slow acting and fast acting. Then you can inject the slow acting at (say) 7am and 7pm and then use the fast acting as and when you need it?

Trish16248 welcome I agree with what chook said I think it would probably be easier if done this way I done nights and days working in home care hospitals etc I take Novo rapid +lantus needs a little working out but everything should be fine just remember to test blood sugars when you can and watch the snacks lol all the best.

Thank you, I'm going to have to ask about this when I next go to the diabetic nurse, it's all new to me so not sure what is what at the minute but I do undetstand what you are saying, thanks for the reply crook.

Trish16248 sorry forgot to ask have you been given a BG meter by nurse you didn't say if you test or not and are you doing the shifts at present.

Yes I have a monitor, and testing before and after meals for now until I can stabilise my levels, not started back work yet but it is in my contract to do some nights every so often so it's not a regular thing just wondering how everyone else crossed this hurdle x

It's called a basal/bolus insulin regime, the nurse will know what your on about if you mention the term.

I use basal/bolus regime and work shifts. I keep the basal the same every day and eat very low carb during shifts to keep bolus insulin very low, for me this works very well. Good luck getting things under control.
