Hi. I was diagnosed with shingles two days ago after 3 days of pain, diabetic since late February this year. I was wondering if pain causes a big rise in Hbaci, think i typed that wrong but anyway i have a test next month and was really hoping for a low number. Was 11.4 late February, 5.8 in May 16th. So to compete my whinge for the day the pain really is unbelievable and am on anti botics as well as codeine for pain quite depressed because i feel like it's a set back after so much hard work. Low carbing and fasting 16/8. Have done full days fast twice so far and have done well on it. Any information about pain and it's affect on 3 monthly bloods would be appreciated. Thanks.

It'll hit your numbers, no question. MAJOR priority is the shingles. Rest, recovery and keeping cool

Get well :)

Are you on anti-virals? They are most effective against shingles as shingles is caused by a virus. Pain and stress can cause a rise in BGs, but as @Mike D says recovering from the shingles is the priority right now.

I hope you feel better soon.

Hi@ Zand I'm on a tablet called 21 FAMVIR 3 times a day. Stress i have had quite a lot of the past year or so and more since diabetic diagnoses this year but getting better with that now.

Yes, that's good, they should be working for you soon.

As the others have said stress and pain will raise BG.
However, hb1ac is an average over last 3 months. So one week of shingles will only have a small impact on next week's test.

Look after yourself and get well soon.

Thanks @helensaramy that's good to know.

@Moggely - Just concentrate on getting over your shingles. I'm sure you could always nudge back the HbA1c test if it really, really bothered you.

Personally, I'm in the "it is what it is" camp, and if this one is disappointing, then with a following wind, there'll be no shingles in the next one, so a bit of a jump start on that one.

I have always been impatient @DUCKMod so this diabetics thing is teaching me more then i thought .I expected instant results as i worked so hard to get it. But your right. Thanks.

Everyone reacts differently Moggely. I found when I was recently diagnosed, that my numbers would notch down, rather than slide down. So my body would fight and fight to maintain it's old "comfort zone", then give in and develop a new lower one it'd fight to maintain, then notch again.

We're all different which is all part of the joy and frustration of this condition. You'll do fine.

oohhh @Moggely you have my sympathy, I have had frequent bouts of shingles over the years. My shingles is always triggered by very high stress levels, over the years I have noticed a significant rise in my BG levels when I hve shingles, a much bigger rise than when I am "just" highly stressed.
As lots of the above have said, just concentrate on recovering from the shingles. Your BG levels will go back down again once youre better.
Much easier said than done but would you be able to reduce some of the stress? I know in my own case that many times it was totally out of my control.
In terms of "normal life" with T2, BG levels can fluctuate for no apparent reason sometime, after a few years I dd notice patterns for myself: hormones, high heat, really cold weather, visiting my parents  After a few years you will be able to recognise your own patterns:)

Hard luck, shingles is often really painful. It’s a virus, infection of a nerve so it can appear in various parts of the body. If caused by stress you would certainly benefit from trying to alleviate the cause. Probably easier said than done. Neuropathic pain can be pretty tricky to treat, so don’t expect to be completely pain free unless you get lucky. Not much help but try to be gentle with yourself...maybe a little treat every so often?

Not had it, but know others who have. Nasty **** thing
Friend of mine has had it earlier this year, she is still having problems with it.

I had the Zoster vaccination last year which is a freebie for over seventy years old peoples.

Thanks guys for all your advise and encouragement i would do it individually but i'm finding i'm posting back to myself lolol. I'm not sure how to do it. Someone said to put@ before peoples names so will give it a go.

Hi@Scimama I cannot imagine having frequent bouts of this i really feel for you and once is enough lets hope. Yes it has effected the reading a little but not as bad as i thought it would. Feel so much better today. Thanks for the response.
