Short high(ish) spike vs longer lower spike?

I have a problem with this, which apparently is rare but my doctors don't know why it happens. I go very drowsy after each meal, and very often go into one of, what I call, my 'diabetic sleeps'.

This is exactly what used to happen to me. It was horrific - especially if I had to drive home. Thankfully, it disappeared completely when I started taking insulin; I just don't get the spikes in the first place.

I tried to understand what's causing it, but there's very little on this in the literature. It does seem though that sudden drops in bg have that effect, even if the levels themselves aren't hypo. I also had this thing where my levels did go low and then slowly return to baseline (without insulin!), but that didn't happen every time.

Hi Sirzy!

Glad you enjoyed the cheesecake and managed to adapt it for your needs! Think I'll give a chocolate version a go soon :D

Thanks for the info Sirzy. Looks like I'm on the right track with almonds with my breakfast (unsweetened muesli, fruit and low fat Greek yogurt). I've given up testing in the morning as my waking time can vary anywhere between 6am and 11am depending on work so I'm never sure whether the result is being influenced by liver dump or not. The only thing to be careful about is the fat content. An ounce of almonds twice a day will provide about 30 grams of fat, which is quite high considering that the overall recommended amount of fat per day is around 70 grams.

Smidge,

Drizzle some of the melted choc across the top and let it set again so it crunches when you eat it, heaven!!

Sugarmog,

It does seem that some almonds at breakfast is a good idea for keeping my spike managable, strangely enough though, they didn't make any difference to my bg when I tried them with my lunch :? I know what you mean about fasting numbers varying so much, if I get up much past 8.30 my bg lets me know about it, I only get a lie in if I'd had a few cheeky vodkas the night before nowadays!

BTW, I wouldn't worry about the fat content of almonds too much as it's almost all mono and polyunsaturated fat and almonds have been shown to actually lower 'bad' choloesterol. I'm lucky(?) enough to not have to worry to much about calories as I'm a skinny db, but I realise that all that fat can quickly add up!
