Should I be worried if I have 7.3 mmol\L FBS?

Allan_PH

Newbie
I went to hospital to have a Fasting Blood Sugar Test. I don't have a doctor. I want to be tested out of curiosity. the result is 7.3 mmol/L and the normal range is 3.8-6.1.

Would a doctor diagnose me as a Type 2 Diabetic person?

I am so worried and it is really depressing because my mother had type 2 diabetes and I know all her hardships and that is the cause of her death.

I'm 25 years old. and they say people with this disease will only live for 20 years and below and there is no cure. You can just only slow it down.

So, it is 2016. Still no cure for this disease?

Is there something I can do to reverse my condition without medication? I want to do something while I am still young to prevent those complications that are caused by diabetes.

Thanks and Good Day

Hi @Allan_PH and welcome to the forum. Firstly, as far as I am aware most of us here are not doctors so couldn't and shouldn't offer you a diagnosis.

The normal process for identifying diabetes is through an HbA1c blood test. Unlike hour fasting test this gauges your average blood glucose level for the last 90-days. The reason this is is more accurate than hour fasting test is actually quite logical. Let us say you ate 4 iced donuts before bed and then woke 5- hours later. It is quite possible your blood glucose levels would be through the roof, though you need not necessarily be diabetic.

I would urge you to go to a doctor, tell them your concerns and ask to be tested. Once you have the results you can act accordingly. Even if you are diagnosed it isn't the end if the world. There are lots of people on this forum who have managed to bring their BG levels down to a point where they are either "pre-diabetic" or that it has been fully reversed.

And the good news is that it isn't a requirement to die after 20 years. There are many cases of people who (through diet and exercise) have lived (and continue to live) long and fulfilling lives.

I know it must be very scary fight now, but try to face the rear. If you can then people on this forum will gladly help and support you.

Just remember .. it ain't over until the fat lady sings ... and right now she isn't even in the theatre.

I have tagged @daisy1 because she will have a stack of information she will post for you that many of us found really useful.

Welcome to the forum @Allan_PH

As @Welshman1952 says, a one off bs test isn't going to be 100% accurate. There are a number of factors which can affect the result, including what you have recently eaten, an infection or illness, and stress.
You need to get a full HbA1c test done to know for sure what your bs levels are. Even if you are pre-diabetic you can take action to avoid becoming diabetic by changing how you eat, and exercise. In a way it is good to know if you are pre-diabetic so you can make the necessary changes.
How is it you don't have a GP? If you live in the UK you should be able to register with a GP, and ask for a HbA1c test.

Edit: Apologies for wrong figures posted earlier. I was going by old notes in my diary which seem to be wrong. I don't know where I got them from. I usually go by the HbA1c figures, below 42 non-diabetic, 42-47 pre-diabetic, 48 and above diabetic.

The best thing you can do besides go see a doctor and get properly tested is to stick with this forum and read read read. Go through old threads and start new ones with any questions you have. The people here are wonderful and welcoming and have experience with many different ways of controlling coping and living with diabetes and pre-diabetes.

I'm not too sure where @Prem51 obtained those figures.

http://www.diabetes.co.uk/diabetes_care/blood-sugar-level-ranges.html

The current blood sugar levels for diagnosis of diabetes on a fasting BG test are:
normal - below 6.1mmol/l
pre-diabetes 6.1 - 6.9mmol/l
diabetes - 7mmol/l or more

However, a person is unlikely to be diagnosed purely on the result of one single FBG test. It would be followed up with an HbA1c and maybe another FBG.

The NICE guidelines regard a fasting plasma glucose result of 5.5 mmol/l as putting someone at higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes, particularly when accompanied by other risk factors for type 2 diabetes.

As everyone else has said, we can't diagnose you. Only your doctor can do that, so you need to register with one and ask for the tests.

Welcome to the forum @Allan_PH.
Non diabetic range is below 7.0 mmol/L.
Pre-diabetic is 7.0 - 7.7bmmol/L
Diabetic is above 7.7 mmol/L

So your test would not indicate that you might have diabetes, but you could be pre-diabetic. But as @Welshman1952 says, a one off bs test isn't going to be 100% accurate. There are a number of factors which can affect the result, including what you have recently eaten, an infection or illness, and stress.

I was diagnosed with type 2 with an HbA1c of 7.5? No mention of pre diabetes..
