Should I have put on weight after my diagnosis?

I was diagnosed with type 1 at the beginning of june after having the typical symptoms (thirsty, losing weight etc.) and I was told that the insulin would cause me to gain weight. However, I've put on less than a pound since then. My blood sugar is usually between 4 and 8 so I know that it's not because my blood sugar's high. I've also noticed when brushing my hair, clumps are falling out. I'm going to arrange a doctor's appointment but is this normal? Or should I be worried? Thankyou in advance!

Hi, there is no reason to gain more than your original weight before diagnoses. Hair loss can be caused by uncontrolled diabetes which you obviously haven't got :) One of the other reason is thyroid problems, so best to get a Drs apt to bring this up with him/her.

your body's been through a shock and hair loss in clumps, although worrying, may not mean much long term, see your DR
assuming you need more weight, eat more carbs and protein, which will mean more insulin. I've read here that sometimes, they give a higher fixed dose for new T1, which makes them hungry

CarbsRok makes a good point, your doing the right thing getting checked out and your gp will no doubt carry out some blood checks to determine the cause, try not to worry and see what the outcome is. btw your bg range for someone newly diagnosed is very good.

Hi, I'm type 2 so obviously I'm not answering your main question, but re the hair loss....... Yes I feel it's the shock too. I had similar hair loss after a few shocks in a row and it is beginning to grow back now. I did get the doctor to look at mine, so if I were you I would just check with your GP too. I'm also having my thyroid checked privately because I am told that thyroid problems don't always show up on the routine NHS checks.

Hi I was misdiagnosed for almost a year and eventually after DKA was told I was T1... Instantly my cells jumped with joy when given insulin. I agree with others, your hair loss may well be shock but best check with your diabetic nurse (GPs I've found have little knowledge re diabetes). Re putting on weight, it's true insulin will give you weight gain. Mine dropped to 6 1/2 stone and the diabetic team at the hospital said to make sure I have 30g of carbs every meal... a year later, I'm almost back to my normal weight albeit with a slight belly (never in 20 + 26 years have I had this) but am much happier. Now able to start introducing exercise methinks!

Prior to diagnosis, had you lost weight? In that case yes, it would be normal to regain the weight, and even overshoot. Did you have a low carb diet before diagnosis by any chance, and continue it after? That would be one explanation of not gaining weight (since it looks like your insulin is well balanced). In which case adding some carbs to your diet, and upping your insulin slightly to compensate, should help.

However as others have said I do think it's best to check this with a doctor to be sure.

Mite just take a bit for your body 2 a just to new routine try add more calories to your diet as well should help gain weight
