Hi I am a type 1 diabetic on an pump my sister isn't diabetic but has always suffered from low blood sugar levels the pass 2 months she has been having alot of hypos ranging from 2.4mmol to 3.6mmol getting all the symptoms feeling hot, shakes and worst of them feeling sick. The strange thing is she is getting them about half hour after eating something sweet. she had been to the doctor's and had a fasting blood test which came back 4.1 the doctor said that was normal and has said they are not hypos she's having and that it's impossible to have one after eating! We really don't know what to do next can anyone help? Many thanks Rebecca

Thanks for your reply. We have come across that and said about it to the doctor but she instantly dismissed it! Will take a look at the website thanks

There can actually be various reasons for going hypo as a non diabetic. My nurse helpfully gave me a copy of Practical Diabetes Vol 28 No 3 pages 97-144 and oddly enough I read about it just yesterday in the Diabetologists' question time section on page 106-7 and the answers on page 141-2.

The article gives about 13 reasons for hypolgycaemia in otherwise healthy people, one of which is called "post-prandial hypoglycaemia". This is what your sister is saying is happening so her Dr is incorrect to say it's "impossible"; however, GPs are not Diabetologists.

There is a choice of two very simple tests that can be done to see if post-prandial hypoglycaemia is at play, and her GP can arrange those I believe.

This is not advice from me and it is not a medical diagnosis, I'm just pointing out the inaccuracy of her GP's statement that going low after eating is "impossible", so that should she wish to revisit that GP or get a second opinion, she might have a little more information. I don't know how you'd go about finding that article if you want to read it but you could try your diabetes team.

Hi Rebecca
After reading your story about your sister I would advise you get a second opinion,as this doesn't sound right.
