Can anyone tell me what their experience is with this medicine.? GP has taken me off Metformin, big relief, and prescribed me these. I would like to know specifically how long it takes to see an effect on blood glucose as well as side effects. Many thanks.
 
Hi titaniumshark, I have been on 100mg of sitagliptin (Januvia) per day since beginning of November and can't say I have any adverse side effects at all, just maybe a few headaches to start with. I had sitagliptin added to my prescribed metformin as my levels were not coming down enough. Since then my hba1c has come down from 12.3 to 6.8 in 3 months so it seems to be working. Hope you get on okay with them.
 

Thank you for the information Julie. It sounds promising. GP has dropped my metformin completely as it was making me so ill. So it will be 50mg Januvia per day and 160mg Gliclazide. I'm really hoping this works as I'm at my wits end. Side effects have been so bad that I feel markedly better off meds and with raging high bg levels than I feel on the meds. Fingers crossed.
 
Hi. Were you on Metformin SR, the Slow Release version? If not, the GP was remiss in not changing you over to that. Are you normal or overweight? I was on Sitagliptin for 2 years before insulin and the only problem was slight headaches for a week or so. The Gliptins work by extending the time the pancreas produces insulin after a meal. The drug should start working immediately. Can I also ask how old you are as well as weight etc as this can have implications on the actual type of diabetes
 


I've been on slow release metformin for over a year, normal metformin for 5 years before that. Diagnosed at 34...I'm 40 now. Not overweight.

Hey along with your medicine Januvia, take care to see that you have a healthy diet and exercise that would help to improve the glycemic control.

I have been on 50mg of Januvia for almost a year now with no side effects, they have worked well in keeping my BG under control.
 
Hi I have been on Sitagliptin for 1 year and have had no side effects. I have been told to reduce my gliclazide to only two tablets a day as I am doing so well after losing15kilos in weight. I am visually impaired because of not finding out for many years that I had diabetes. My mission now is to tell everyone to get tested.
 
Thank you all for your responses......so helpful. I am on healthy diet, lots of exercise etc. Diabetes nurse and gp happy with my food and exercise diaries so hoping the switch of meds will do the trick. I haven't got my hands on the Januvia yet as the pharmacy had to order them in. Hopefully will start on them tomorrow.
 
Hi. As you are quite young and not overweight do bear in mind the possibility of Late onset T1. I don't want to worry you but if your blood sugar doesn't come under control then it is worth knowing of this possibility so you ask for the two relevant tests if needed
