We've just started low carbing and it seems to be working a treat but nurse has just put hubby on some new meds and we're worried that if we low carb at the same time he might go too far and have a hypo. The nurse doesn't seem worried but wondered if you lovely lot might know anything about these new tablets. They are called Sitagliptine and the nurse says they stabilise blood sugars rather than lower them. Does anyone have a working knowledge of them that can put our minds at ease?

I was on Vildagliptin (same family of drugs all Gliptins)for 6 years and never went low they don't cause low blood sugar

Hi, yes!
I have been on sitagliptin for over two years now!
It is a dpp4 inhibitor and it creates more insulin and causes the glucagon and glycogen stores in your liver to help you not to spike higher. It is helping your system to cope with the higher blood sugar levels, by restricting the high spikes and gradually bringing down your average blood glucose levels down. Your husband probably has fluctuating blood levels and they do need stabilising.
I'm not saying, that hypos are not going to happen, and you need to monitor what is happening by testing.
I have no side effects from the meds, but if you read the leaflet with the meds, you can see how in the extreme, there can side effects.
Wikipedia has a very good description of the meds.

Thank you folks, I feel much better now. Yes he did used to have spikes but they have all levelled out now so they are working. We will continue to monitor them though for the reason that we need to know if the diet is working properly. So far so good!
