Hi everyone
I was newly diagnosed as Type 2 (aged 41) at the end of November and my GP told me my hba1c was off the scale at 117. He put me on metformin 500g twice a day, and after a change in diet, losing a stone in weight and a little exercise my count was down to 52 after three months.
Since then, I've hardly eaten bread, rice, pasta or potatoes, but do eat shredded wheat daily, and make most meals from scratch. Mainly meat, fish and vegetables. I do eat a lot of crisps as snacks (skips, quavers etc), which is my downfall... I've upped my exercise and generally walk 25-30 miles a week (according to my fitbit) - my main walks are usually 40mins/2miles during lunch breaks, or several shorter walks at weekends. I try and aim for 8000-10000 steps a day if possible. During the past 3 months, I've also lost another 20lb and my BMI is down to around 34, which isn't great, but it's improving.
What was surprising was my my hba1c count had improved again, which I was told was now 'normal' at 35.
Now I don't for one minute think I'm cured, and will always be mindful of what I eat, but I feel like I can now relax a tiny bit and have the odd piece of toast etc. I'm still planning to continue with exercise and more weight loss (hopefully!) as I'm actually enjoying it, especially when the sun is out!
My GP has also said to try cutting my metformin down to one tablet a day and see where I am again with my hba1c in another couple of months, and if it continues to stay normal, perhaps coming off it altogether.
After a devastating shock six months ago, I can honestly say that I feel so much better at the present time and feel like I am in control again. I hope you don't mind me sharing all this...
