I have really done well since been told I am type 2 - have changed my diet - have a good understand of what foods are bad - my blood sugar post prandial is generally below the level of 120mg/dl - still reading labels like crazy which can sometimes be difficult as lots of items in the shops are only printed in Greek but generally can get the info from internet or from Greek speaking friends.

My questions is: Anyone out there living in Paphos area of Cyprus ? if so do you know of any "Diabetic" organizsation/meeting would be nice to meet face to face with pople in the same situation., cannot find any info on internet and not much help at hospital when I ask about a Dietician. Seeing my Doctor next week so will ask him but got a funny feeling might have to go to Nicosia which is 2 hr drive away.

Also - Is it correct that my fasting sugar in morning is always in the 100mg/dl (this monring it was 6.9) but after some meals I am normally in the same range or sometimes lower. I read that fasting level ranges should be lower than this.

It really is good to be able to talk and ask questions on the forum feel a bit isolated here at present.

Hi,

Ideally your morning fasting should be under 6mmol/l which I think converts to 100 in your units mg/dl.

Before meals you should also aim for under 6mmol/l and 2 hrs after meals under 7.8mmol/l.

Hope this helps.

Not sure how to control morning fasting results - any tips would be appreciated - do not snack at night dinner is @ 7pm and test results are normally good so not sure what is happening during sleep.

often the fasting level is the last to drop, so no need to panic just yet! Have you heard of the Dawn Phenomenon? There is plenty of discussion about it on these forums, or you could look it up on Google. In many people our livers dump glucose when we are fasting. This usually happens on getting up as our bodies need glucose to get us up and running. Do you test immediately on getting up, or do you shower or potter about first? it is best to do it immediately. Have a look at this thread http://www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/threads/pesky-dawn-phenomenon.57672/

Thank you for advice - I usually shower first so it normally is within 30-40 minutes from getting up. I will take my kit upstairs with me and test it very first thing upon waking. I will check out the Dawn Phenomenon

You will notice a difference testing as soon as you get up. Showering often raises levels, as does pottering about. Good luck.

Good morning. Welcome aboard the T2 train. Paphos is a lovely area. My neighbour used to have a house at Chloraka, which I visited many times.

We used to have a poster here from Cyprus, @pavlosn, but I haven't seen him post for ages. I have been wondering if he's OK. Maybe he'll pop up, as I have tagged him.

Hi there, just a quick note to say that I am fine just been a bit too busy to post lately.

Must make an effort to post more for my sake, when I do not post I am usually not as good at keeping on top of my diabetes.

Thank you for your concern just the same.

Best regards

Pavlos

Sorry but I do not know of any groups in Paphos

Pavlos
Type 2 - Diagnosed 2009; Latest HbA1c 5,8%; Diabetes Medication: metformin 2x850mg; Other medication: Aspirin 75mg, Valsartan 80mg, Rosuvostatin 20mg, Ezetimibe 10mg; Exercise: One hour walk daily, tennis weekly, swimming when warm enough

Im also almost 6 weeks on now. I had high BG every morning, around 8.5 at least. Was sure that the Dawn Phenomenon was the cause and started to take resistant starch to prevent this (potato starch). That lowered my morning BG to 7.5. But this last week it seems like my body has finally addepted to the diet and the meds, and I have tested 6.0 or lower for several days now. Without the resistant starch I might add. Seems like it takes some time for the BG to get down to acceptable levels and 6 weeks are not very long.

Good luck!

Nice to see you Pavlos. I'm glad all is well in your world.
