Hi, since I aquired the dreaded diabetes I have had very few problems except one which is itchy skin.I have this on a daily basis which I feel like I have been bitten by an insect.I rub the affected area and the skin raises into a small lump and can develop into a lump which can spread outwards in the worse case.I have been to the doctors and I was given some cream which does help along with placing ice on it.The doctor has never told me what this condition is.I had to see the doctor initialy as on the top of my feet had got hot to the extent that my skin blistered as though I was sun burnt.Strange I know and since the "Sun burn" I have had itchy skin.I don't know wether this is related to diabetes or not,if anyone has had a similar experience I would be very interested.

Hi and welcome to the forum

This sounds to me like an allergic reaction to something, but only your doctor can say whether it is or not. If this has happened to you since going on a medication then have a read of the leaflets that come with your medications, sometimes something in the meds can cause you to react to the sun or it could be something in a cream that causes Photosensativity. As I said though only your doctor can say for sure.

Hello afc53,

I know what you mean, as since I have become diabetic, I do suffer from dry skin a lot more.

I get dry hands (which could be caused by the gym) and dry feet. Generally I feel that my skin has changed and become more dry.. I have told my doctor, but he is the type of man who blames everything on being diabetic... WHICH DON'T HELP me...

SO what I do is use baby oil on my body everyother day to lock in moisture. The soles of my feet get done before I goto bed..

I even have my sugar levels below 6.5 mmol 2 hours after I eat 99% of the time. SoI guess its a qurk of having this dreaded condition.

Anyway just keep looking after yourself.

Take care,

Definitely sounds like some kind of allergy. I'm allergic to cold and vibration, both of which are rare, but genuine allergies. there's a whole famly of Physical allergies,. you might have developed one of them. Try Clarytine. It's available without prescription and works well. If you need it a lot. see the doctor. They need to test liver function if you use it daily.

I had this problem when Nova changed their insulin from synthesised human insulin (modified porcine) to genetically engineered human insulin - they changed the insulin but it was supplied in the same packaging with the same name, so I never knew there had been any change.. I developed this severe itching skin, which drove me mad! GP treated me for every possible thing they could think of, including scabies.

When I discovered that the insulin had been changed, I suggested this as a cause, and was ridiculed - "Ge insulin is just the same as the synthetic human insulin" and "it cannot be the insulin".. But I switched to porcine and my itch went away in days.

It is now accepted that some people do have a reaction to particular insulins. Not saying this is the cause of your problem, but if all else fails, it may be worth looking at the possibility that your insulin is what you are allergic to.. You have the right to change to an animal insulin, and Wockhart fortunately still supply porcine insulin.

I cant tell you what it is, but i suffered with a rash on and off all over my body and it was when the doctor did blood test to find out my allergian levels where they found out i was diabetic. and although it is much better now my levels are under control its does still flare up at time, like today :-( where the inside of my thighs and around my waist one mass of hot red welts and its not that i ate badly yesterday. 18 months on i still cant find a pattern that triggers it off.

My BG levels are very tight, but I also have this. Keep the area as clean as possible and use a good moisture rich cream. I use organic coconut oil, and that does help. It seems a peculiar to this condition.

I do get itchy skin sometimes but I find it is mostly after a bath (I use unscented/hypo allergenic soaps) and mostly on the top of my toes - not athletes foot. I use E45 cream on the itchy bits. The other problem I get are spots on my chin and around my nose which can get itchy. The doctor gives me an antibiotic steroid cream which clears it up after a few days. I can't remember what it's called as i haven't needed it for a while, but will need to get some more as I've just broken out again.

If you have raises on your skin and feel itchy, then you can massage with the natural oil. You can use rosehip oil. This natural oil can give you relief from this all problems.
