I have a really bad time trying to get enough sleep. Everyninght I fall asleep no problem then wake up about 4 am every night and stay awake until morning. Needless to say I am so tired during the day and cannot seem to get through the day without an afternoon nap.

I have also noticed that I have the dawn phenomena my blood sugars are very good at bedtime but by morning they have shot up. Does this have anything to do with the bad nights sleep?

Anyone else having the same problem?

Hi Joanne1 :)

There are almost as many reasons for sleep problems as there are people and many of us suffer one or more. :( If you are getting to sleep ok that is at least one good thing but the trick for you is obviously to stay asleep for the full stretch that you require. You need to try to pinpoint what the problem is so that you can cross off the things that it isn't.

I don't know your age so can't tell if you are working or not or perhaps have children to care for, but it occurs to me that if you can't think of any reason for not sleeping then you may even be stressing about not sleeping. If you are not working does it really matter if you have to sleep at unorthodox times?

Are you totally relaxed when you go to bed but stressing about something which then wakes you so thoroughly that you can't get back to sleep. You may be totally unaware of stressing so try to note what is going through your head when you wake up as that will give you a clue and then you can deal with it.

Do you have any other medical condition that is causing it? For example I have ME and know that if I do too much and am overtired then I am not going to sleep very well for several nights. Sometimes just accepting that it is happening and acknowledging that it is something you just have to live with can even sort it out.

Perhaps you need to have a more restful time overall and not be doing as much as you may be currently; often there is too much 'busyness' in our lives.

The most important thing to do is to relax and have a 'going to bed routine' with nice things which you like to do like a warm drink, cool or warm bath, rubbing in some hand or other cream, reading some poetry, have gentle music playing, burn some candles and think pleasant thoughts - anything which you will enjoy, perhaps even going back to bedtime prayers as when you were a child. If you do this regularly you will come to enjoy going to bed and will be anticipating a lovely restful sleep and it will happen. :)

If you are not sleeping then I am afraid that your BG levels will be all over the place - but don't stress about it as that won't help either!
