I don't live with my new boyfriend yet as I have children and he's in the process of re-locating to where I live. He's currently living 200 miles away. He's got diabetes 2, and I'm only just learning about it. He's got a bad cold at the minute and I'm scared he's sleeping too much. He had a scare yesterday and had to have sweet tea & appeared okay & last night talking to him. He's still asleep now. I'm looking up diabetic ketoacidosis and scaring myself witless. I'm only too aware there's nothing I can do at distance but can someone please suggest something I can do? Is he sleeping too much?

Hi, Welcome

Ketoacidosis is extremely unlikely, stop worrying, we heal when we sleep ;) when you read about diabetes all you tend to see is the complications, if controlled db isnt a big deal, try to find out how hes control is, if its good then no need to worry about him :) if not too good then have a read of some posts on this forum regarding helping him improve his lifestyle

As Andy said, Ketoacidosis is rare and only a concern with Type 2 if the blood sugar is wildly out of control.

Also, some people just need a lot more sleep, especially when ill, regardless of diabetic status. I exist comfortably on 5 hours a night, and even when my blood sugar was higher, I rarely slept more than that. My other half, who is not diabetic, can sleep for 16 hours (much like a dog), if he has the spare time to devote to sleeping... especially this time of year. We have found that a SAD light pod does help him snap out of the hibernation phase when it becomes a problem.
