Hi

Just checked on the Slimfast site and it appears that as I am only allowed gluten free foods, I can only have the ready made shakes. Obv more expensive in the long run but on offer at mo...

Does this alter anything in the way of cals or anything...any of you knowledgeable folk know?

Hi!

Yes, there is a difference - the ready-made are 325ml while the ones you make up are 250ml, so the ready-made are bigger. However, they both have 230cal if you make up the shake with 250ml of semi-skimmed milk.

However - if you use water instead of milk for the made-up ones, you can shed 88 cals straight away.

I wouldn't worry - the ready-mades are not what was used on the Newcastle Study diet, and will contain a little bit more fat, but as far as calorie restricting goes - 3 x 230 = 690 cals. Make it up to 800 cals with your veg intake.

I hope you get on okay with it. I find the shakes okay and not too sweet (I've had both) but I am taking in much more than my normal amount of carbs - 35g carb in one made-up one out of a tin (a bit less without the milk), which is a whole day's worth! Strangely, the ready-made ones have only 26g carb.

I'm still eating an omelette for breakfast, with two shakes out of a tin if I'm at home, one ready-made and one out of a tin if I'm working, plus a whole heap of microwaved and/or roast veg for supper.

So far I'm okay and I haven't hit the cheese yet - but it's only my second day!

My husband and myself did the newcastle diet last year on the readymade slimfast. Hubby managed to get good deals on them and it made it so much easier to do. He has the diabetes and I went along for the ride, to help him out and to lose some weight too! We stuck to it and enjoyed it, after the initial 1st week which was a case of working out how to make the veg tastier!
I don't believe the readymade shakes made any difference.
His bg readings are still no higher than 5 most days. We are still trying to lose weight but eating normal foods, just less of it. He has lost over 9 stone, and I have lost over 3.5stone. Most importantly, I have my husband back again. He is happier, more energetic and has more confidence. I would recommend it for any one wanting to change their life for the better.
We'd be so interested to hear of others experiences and also to see what the newcastle doctors have to say now so many others have tried it.
Good luck to anyone trying it.
