I am sure you are going to get a lot of good advice from the pro's who belong to this forum. As for myself, I joined Weight Watchers a few years ago but didn't mention that I was diabetic so I don't know if they would have tailored a diet to suit my needs. Anyway, I lost a lot of weight eating what I now know was probably the wrong things. But at least I was cutting down on the wrong thing so that helped a great deal.
