Smoking and effects on blood sugars

Hi everyone,

I'm a newly diagnosed type 1.5, currently being managed by metformin and diet (initially managed with Gliclazide also). I stopped smoking (less than 10per day) as soon as I found out about my Diabetes back in December. However, after 5 months of being cig free (which I was really proud of!) I've succumbed to my stress and new found and unwelcome anxiety related to completing my full time social work degree, placement, 3 year old and house commitments and bought a vapour cigarette just for use when I seriously need it. Now I have used it occasionally Sun & Mon and found myself quite anxious yesterday which could be affecting my sugars (although stress does not appear to do this to my readings often) my readings are usually in the 7's, occasional 5's & 6's, my morning readings have been creeping up from 7-8 and just had a 10.9 3 hours after my usual portion of fruit and fibre! :(

Now I know I may be having a wonderful LADA day of unpredictable pancreas functioning, but just wondered if anyone had any experience with the vapour cigs affecting them? I know I shouldn't be having it on the rare occasions but I thought sod it if its going to help me, now I'm not so sure!

Just done a google search and it appears that its the nicotine rather than any of the other 400 components in cigs, so I would say yes e cigs will have an affect as it is nicotine vapour in them.

Rubbish!!! Thanks Dawnmc, I knew I'd regret it as soon as I ordered it, was unsure if it would be the inhalation or the Nicotine or both probably :( lowest dose too, looks like ill have to resort to a bit of deep breathing and 'woosaaaing' instead :(

Ah well, you really should be congratulating yourself, and feel really proud, it isn't easy giving up the smokes - I haven't yet
One day at a time eh.

Ah thank you ;) I wanted to pack in anyway and Diabetes was the perfect excuse! Just realised that I can buy juice with no nicotine in it for the e cig, might see if I can kid myself and if that affects my sugars, I never want to near 10 again, last thing I need is more meds or insulin! Cheers Dawnmc and good luck ;)
