Hi,

I was wondering what ideas people have for snacking on the LCHF diet? I've been doing it for a couple of days and my levels have been between 6-8 down from in the teens

I'm confident with meals just looking for low carb snacks, and yoghurt recommendations? I'm not too keen on Greek yoghurt but I'll give anything a try

Thank you x

Hi, and well done so far. That is a great start. :)

I have never snacked, ever, so am not much help, but from reading many threads on this forum it seems that if you do the LCHF diet properly (ie low enough carbs and high enough fat) you will lose the need to snack. The low carb and higher fat will make you less hungry, and you will discover that snacking is merely a habit you don't need.

Meanwhile, try a few nuts. A Greek yogurt is great with a large strawberry chopped up to sweeten it, Cheese is fine, and a coffee with cream fills you up.

Greek yoghurt takes on a whole new dimension if you add a few frozen strawberries and linseeds overnight. Looks yuck next morning but give it a good stir and it's lovely. One of my faves.

I agree that as you get used to low carbing, you won't want to snack but sometimes I like a sweet treat to keep me in check!

Keep up the great work. Wish my bg would dive so wonderfully in a short time...!! :))

The higher fat part of LCHF should help keep you feeling nice and full, so make sure you're consuming adequate good fats and oils, and hopefully you'll find you won't need to snack.

You don't have to eat Greek yoghurt, but definitely keep well away from any low fat, lite, added sugar, or added fruit ones. And if you want yoghurt with fruit, just add your own berries instead.

Coffee or cocoa with cream, bouillon or stock cubes with added cream or sour cream, small portions of berries with cream (or the dreaded yoghurt :D), a piece of high cocoa (75% or more) dark chocolate, cheese, olives, nuts and seeds, a spoonful of almond or coconut butter, fat balls (look on Google for recipes for these), are all good small but filling options if you find have to snack. Low carb microwave muffins made with ground almonds or hazelnuts, flax seed, coconut or sesame flour (or various combinations of these) with or without various flavourings or additions - grated cheese, spices, herbs, chopped nuts or olives - are slightly more substantial depending on size. And small avocados, boiled eggs, slices of ham, corned beef and other cooked meats, or chicken drumsticks, could also be somewhat more filling snacks - or with added salad, etc, eaten as small meals.

The greek or natural yoghurt with some choc protein powder thru it and the frozen strawberries is a great snack n takes the bland taste away

It depends what you mean by snacks. For something a bit substantial I would go for a low carb bread like Burgen or the LIDL High Protein roll toasted with pate or peanut butter. Or an avocado, with dressing or Worcester Sauce.
For nibbles cheese, especially babybels, cooked meats like chorizo (I like the hot peperami sticks),hardboiled eggs, celery sticks and olives are good. Also nuts, especially walnuts which are also supposed to be good for lowering cholesterol.

Edit: I bought some Crayfish Tails from LIDL yesterday, £1.29 for 125g. They were nice and I will buy them again.

I would think if you are doing LCHF and testing your levels before and 2 hours after eating a meal snacking in between meals could mess up your results as the two hour post meal test will not be a true one of your BG meal result because of the snack in between. If you are eating enough at a meal you should not really need to snack. I agree with Bluetit snacking can be just a habit

I like cheeses - Babybell or slice of Edam, nuts, seeds, occasionally a 9 bar if b4 a run...... Cucumber & spoon of houmus, avocado or spoonful of Philadelphia! I don't like yoghurt as not keen on the texture - wish I did!!! Gd luck - love lchf way of eating
