Sorry if this has been asked before, did a search but could not find anything.

I was due to donate blood yesterday but it turned out I had not had enough clear days since finishing a course of antibiotics.

Before leaving the house I had thrown some nuts, cheese and an avocado in my bag for my post donation snack knowing that biscuits and crisps are the usual offerings!

It is a couple of years since I last felt dizzy either during or after a donation but I still get the 'give extra rest / stalk her to make sure she is ok' treatment

My question is I usually eat a good amount of the offered snacks and drinks after to the donation to demonstrate I'm ok to go home - will I be ok to eat my low carb snacks and forego the biscuits? Or do you think the staff would prefer I eat the biscuits?

Well you wouldn't be able to eat the biscuits if you were coeliac would you, so the obvious thing is to take something that suits your dietary needs

Can you donate blood? Since I was diagnosed as diabetic I was excluded to blood donations.
I still go to meet other blood donors because they're nice people and give me some single use lancets that I find really easy to use and not painful.
Sometimes they have also some low carb snacks like seasoned cheese or pork-and-beef sausages.

Thanks all. It was my first attempt at giving blood since my diagnosis. I did the health questions over the phone when I made the appointment. They did ask lots of questions, I can't remember them all but a few around medication and foot problems, I'm not on meds and don't have any complications so it seemed I was ok to give blood until I remembered when I got there that I had just finished a course of antibiotics

I'll be making another appointment soon so will take along my low carb snacks, since asking the question I now remember the staff get more anxious about not taking the offered drinks before and after than the snacks. I always do take at the least minimum fluid due to dizziness problems in the past.

From your user name I assume you are in Italy! Maybe the rules are different.

I love that you still go along and agree that blood donors are generally nice people Never seen any seasoned cheese or sausages offered by the NHS here that would be awesome!

I suppose that rules are different, and from what I have heard the rule were made more restrictive a couple of years ago. For the snacks they are nicely offered by a blood donor that has a small supermarket, it's an unofficial thing. ;-)

I always have problems giving blood for testing as they often take about 4 attempts, use both arms and only just manage to get enough before my veins disappear and it stops flowing so I've decided it might not be such a good idea!!

Dehydration can cause this to happen @Daphne917 , try drinking plenty leading up to the blood test.

Hi @noblehead that doesn't work either! I've even had to go back the following week because they couldn't get any blood out. I was even told off by an anaesthetist prior to one op because, although he managed to find my veins, they disappeared before he could use them!!!
