snacks

Hi Dean.

I assume you were on two objections a day before this? Or have you just been out on insulin? If you've just come from having two injections a day then I think you'll find the new regime a lot easier. Ok, it's more injections but it's much more flexible as you can adjust you dose with each meal. When I was on two injections (a LONG time ago I found that I had to eat at pretty much the same time every day, have x grams of carbs with each meal and have between meal snacks. On four injections a day my meal times are much more flexible and I'm not bound by the "I must have this many carbs" rule. As for snacks between meals, it's up to you. I don't tend to snack much between meals. If I do it's usually fruit or nuts. I try and stick to low carb options to keep my sugars more stable and my insulin requirements down.

no i went straight on 4 injections, i am just trying to learn about carb counting, there is so much to learn. thanks for you reply. dean

Your diabetes nurse/doctor will probably suggest a starting point - how much long lasting insulin to take and how many units of short lasting you should take throughout the day.

If I were you I'd try and make sure way breakfast has a set amount if carbs each day. Same with lunch and dinner. Keep doing this until you get the hang of the injections and your sugars as stable and under control.

Once you've got things sorted you can start experimenting with having more or less carbs. From here you can start to work out your ratio i.e. How many units of insulin you need per x grams of carbs. Once you know that it becomes much easier for you to adjust your insulin to suit each meal :)

Make sure you are in regular contact with your diabetes team for the first month or two and don't be afraid to ask questions - either on here or ask your doctor. You've got quite the learning curve ahead of you but you will get there and will get the Han of things in no time.

Take care
Emma
