so as the title says we had football again yesterday so another chance to experiment i decided to leave the bolus alone and leave it normal ratios and reduce the basal to 60%.

first thing he was 9.0 i didnt test before starting as it was too close to breakfast and not long after the 9.0 so waited a couple of matches and tested again he was then 20.6 not ideal but i felt it was still his breakfast as was only an hour hour and a half after eating but tried to do a bolus but the pump didnt recommend any because the active insulin was covering it so then he played his remaining 2 matches and came off so i tested to see where he was and a perfect 7.7 which i was delighted with so not sure where to go now would like that 20.6 to be lower but not sure how i could make it so any ideas???

also later in the day nearer tea time he was 3.2 so did drop more later but it may be down to the fact he went out to play in the street in the afternoon riding his bike and playing with other children

Hi,

Sounds to me as the 20.6 could be a combination of breakfast, excitement of playing football especially as it's a few matches, and the exercise.

The 7.7 is pretty **** good when he finished, looks like the breakfast was taken care of, and the reduction in basal rate allowed for some compensation for the exercise.

As exercise can affect BG levels long after you have finished exercising maybe you could consider a small reduction of basal after exercise too, especially if he's playing in the street.

Not prefect yet but looks like your getting there, especially with the complexity of exercise :)

Maybe next time he has football you could test hourly from when he wakes throughout the day, and also test inbetween each match, so you can get a better look at what his BG's are doing.

Keep going at it, you'll get there im sure!

hi and thanks for the reply
i did the temp basal for 4 hrs so thought that would of been enough but may do it for longer next time, it was the 20 im not sure how to improve on as the end result was exactly what i had hoped for.

The 20.6 is tricky, he'd still have active insulin from his breakfast so it's hard to know wether to tweak it or not without making him go low afterward, which is really not what you want!.

did he have alot to eat at breakfast? it might have been due to a large breakfast, i find the more carbs i eat the longer it takes the insulin to bring it back down again.

he has the same breakfast everyday and we dont low carb, he has coco pops works out at 60g of carbs which i know alot of people wouldnt eat that amount but he loves his cereals in the morning

Oh, if he has the same every day then i would maybe put the high down to adrenaline from excitement then!

Next time if this happens again, test between matches if you can to make sure he's not this high for a while.

I would also double check there no ketones in his system, i wouldn't think there would be unless he was high before bed the night before and over breakfast but it's better safe than sorry.

I would be tempted to want to tackle this high too but i wouldn't want him to go low either.

I don't see why you should low carb with a child, he's a growing boy and i occasionally have coco pops too :)

he loves his breakfast, i dont believe in restricting his carbs he has a lifetime to watch what he eats he should be able to enjoy his childhood i look at what some people low carb at i think god dylan has that in one meal sometimes but id have to cut out everything he loves to do it. he doesnt tend to snack in between meals tho so i guess it evens out in some respects

I wouldn't either!

When he's older he can decide what he wants to do. Til then i don't see why he can't eat what he wants, of course in moderation like any child diabetes or not. Diabetes shouldn't be a punishment!

Aslong as he gets some greens, is a healthy weight and exercises it's all good by my standards :)

oh he def has all of that he loves his fruit and veg and exercise wise he does football twice a week swimming, running club, taekwondo and then any matches that we may have over a weekend so hes healthy thats for sure.

i guess things will never be perfect perfect will see what happens next time he plays

wow! it's great he does all of those!

Yeah, somethings i guess you can only learn by experimenting :)

we try not to let the diabetes stop him doing anything he wants to infact in the holidays he goes to 2 day football roadshows as well which he absolutly loves. however it is all challenging blood sugar wise altho it is made easier by the pump :D
