So overwhelming

HI Munkey and welcome the forume,

I have been recently diagnosed and enjoyed eating high carb foods such as pasta rice and bread, so when I started reading was a bit concerned about moving to a low carb diet, especially as I ma a bit of a fussy eater.
However after reading many posts on this forum I have started eating to my meter. Just to test how my body reacted to pasta I had some for lunch today. My reading was 7.4 immediately prior to eating, which I know is high, but when I tested 2 hours after eating my BG had spiked to 8.8 which was only a 1.4 rise. I'm hoping this means that I can continue to eat pasta on occasions in the future - albeit at a reduced portion size (approx. half what I would have previously had, but this can be compensated for with extra veg, mushrooms courgettes etc in the meal).

So you may still be able to eat carbs - I hope I can once my pre-food readings have dropped to a better level, which hopefully will drop with exercise and weight loss, as well as the improved diet.

Steve,

Just one thing about pasta - it is (for some strange reason) one of the foods that has a delayed spike. Many of us find that our 2 hr pasta reading is fine. But if we keep on testing, we find that the 3 and 4 hr readings show the rise that didn't happen at 2 hours.

I've never got my head around why this happens, but it may be worth checking whether it happens for you...

Thanks for that information Brunneria.

Just rechecked based on that and came back as 8.6 3 hours 40 after testing so fingers crossed I'm ok with small amounts

Hi Munkey and welcome to the forum.

It's all been said above! Take a deep breath, get a glucose meter, take baby steps. You can control this disease with a bit of effort.
Come back and ask as many questions as you like.

Another thing about pasta, if anyone saw Mike Mosely's show. That pasta cooked, cooled then reheated causes less of a blood sugar spike. Might be worth trying out and testing.

I saw this. Provides some interesting options on low carb diets too!

So me thinking I'm eating well is all just a elaborate ruse? Back to the drawing board on the old diet it is. .. thanks for the heads up I'm just going to go and weep softly in the corner whilst I digest this information a little further!
Sorry if poison was a bit scary. It is just how it effects me.

Thanks one and all for the support and the gentle encouragement I'm still a little confused by it all but I'm starting to take steps to further educating myself and I can clearly see that using this forum was the right thing to do! It's great to have so many different views and opinions on the subject to think I learnt more in the first two hours of using this site than In the six weeks after initial diagnosis is awesome,, now can anybody suggest a decent meter that won't cost me a Kings ransom.!!!

There's a giveaway on the Bayer contour USB metres on the front page of the site again. You can pick up 50 strips for £17 per pack for these. There is another with much cheaper sticks out there too, but I forget its name.

Funnily enough, @Scandichic just made a fabulous post on this about 5 mins ago!

image.jpg Hi there! I felt the same when I was first diagnosed. The best bits of advice I can give are as follows:
Get a meter. The best one is the SD code free because the strips are the cheapest around. If you go to the chemists the strips are £25 per pot for the meters they sell. Although you must buy the codefree on line, you can buy the strips in bulk eg 5 pots for £25 if you use the discount code. First class postage is 50p.

The discount code is attached at the top of this post
I kept a food diary. In the beginning, test before food and then 1 hour and 2 hours after. This gives you an idea of what foods you can and can't eat. After a month or two you will have a pretty good idea and will need to test less often though I usually test a couple of times a day or if I feel funny or unwell.
I also followed a low carb diet. LCHF worked for me. It's easy, don't need to weigh anything or carb or calorie count and the food is filling. I have lost 3 St 10lbs since January. See

Good luck with whatever you decide to do!
