I was diagnosed in February this year after 3 months if falling asleep where I sit constantly. The need for the toilet and weightloss were significant, but the tiredness was what drove me to the GP (yeah ok I thought I was anaemic!)

The promise was "once your BG is levelled out you'll feel much better"

But I don't. I still get bouts of almost debilitating tiredness. I'm well known for needing a nudge in meetings to wake me up!

I thought maybe I was too inactive, and that in turn was making me more tired (is that even possible?). So my evening walk has become a walk/run/jog. I still come home and sit down and fa asleep!

My mum had hypothyroidism so I was checked in April and my thyroid function is completely normal!

So what do you do to get you awake and motivated?!? I find myself making excuses not to go out in the evening as I physically can't bring myself to move!

Perhaps you should re visit your gp and discuss. I did have that a while back where I would come home from work and just fall asleep for hours wake up and go to bed, thats if I could get up for work. did nothing different really other than tighten control on my blood sugars. If I was to have a reading below 4, although technically hypo felt ok I would notice I would be very exhausted for some time.
am taking some tablets for ibs to keep my foods in me for longer as it used to go straight through, maybe its them that has helped thinking about it as my body is now able to use the nutrients I'm.feeding it.
Hope you get some energy back soon.

I can go to 3.5 without warning quite happily, only notice because I test to drive or something. I'm generally between 4.5 and 9, but I'm trying to reduce that to 8.

Getting my tonsils out next week so once things have settled if there's no improvement I guess ill revisit the GP. I struggle to get up for work, but most people do at 5.30am I think!

5.30am lol. Not me ! Still in the land of zzzz then. Even though you don't feel it when 3.5 ~4 obviously have to treat with qa sugar. That I found very exhausting for some time after.

Yeah I always treat anything below 4, if I'm 4-4.5 and a meal isn't coming up then I also treat but not with anything QA, just to prevent a hypo later

I often wonder if I'm low more often and don't realise. Anything 3-3.5 I'm very aware of so it could be the minor lows draining me I suppose!

If you have been running high going back to normal will make you feel tired too. But with it you will need to find your own comfortable range, for me it's between 4 and 8 once I go outside of that range I'm not 100% anymore. Have you checked yoru ketones too? and are eating sensibly? Sometimes we tend to restrict our food intake in order to keep the sugar levels right but in fact should look at just increasing our insulin a little in order to eat properly (what I mean by properly is to satisfy the fuel requirements of our bodies, not the 2 pizzas a day properly :)

I'm a Type 2, so can't comment on hypos etc. Other causes of tiredness include
Anaemia
Vitamin B12 deficiency
Vitamin D deficiency
as well as underactive thyroid, which you've had tested.

Hi Hale, this might be totally unhelpful as I don't take insulin yet but I'm the same as riesenburg... If I go below 4 or above 8 I can literally fall asleep sitting up! I ate chips once (between diagnosis and meds/proper blood results) and one minute I was sitting on the couch and the next my husband was waking me up, checked my BS and low and behold 11.8! Needless to say I no longer eat chips lol!

I take a regular iron supplement as I'm anaemic if I don't.

My BG is fairly stable, I've had a couple extra hypos recently with the heat and exercise. But I was tired before that.

Went to the cinema tonight..... Almost nodded off. Checked BG as soon was it was done and 6.4 so no issues there.

Only non medical theory I have is that it's mentally draining, wondering what BG is doing, counting carbs etc so maybe that makes me tired!

This is true! I've felt so tired before that I've worried and checked BS just to have it perfectly ok! I honestly believe it is the constant worry and care that goes into dealing with the disease it makes u tired... I've heard certain insulins can make u tired too but obviously I don't have first hand experience of it, all I do know is that not knowing when or how or if something is guna change in my condition definitely makes me so 'sick and tired' literally that I have days where I feel like I've had no sleep the night before....it's like a constant weight on my shoulders that rarely seems to shift..the only time I feel relaxed is on the very rare occasion I eat something I know will make me have a higher reading than normal...I had no idea why but now actually it makes sense that it might due to the constant worry of being high not being there because I know I'm guna be high...? If that makes sense?? Sorry I'm rambling now....

I feel tired when my sugars go too high or too low. It really exhausts me.

You say you've been checked for under active thyroid and it came back that you were fine. We're you borderline? Might be worth asking. My husband is borderline and he get so very tired.

Could also be a lasting effect, as in you will get less tired as you keep your sugars under control for longer.

Nope not borderline. "Completely normal and nothing to worry about" apparently. But ill continue to have them checked every 6 months because of my mother.

I've had what I consider stable BG for 3 months now. It's frustrating

Hi Hale,
Whenever I started my pump 7 years ago, once I managed to get my sugars sorted (took about 6 weeks) I was really tired and had a lot of pain all over my body I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia as the drs didn't know what else it could be. The tiredness didn't go until I'd been stable for nearly 6 months afterwards I guess it was just my body readjusting. I feel fine now just took a while. The other thing is it can be very overwhelming especially if you have lots of plans with your life, and have a busy life to try and fit diabetes into that is quite hard. My work has me stressed to bits at the moment and understandably I'm exhausted 24hrs a day. Usually a run with the dogs would give me a little lift but not at the moment I'm just too stressed and depressed. I hope you're feeling back to yourself sooner rather than later.

This is all ringing a bell. Except for the run with the dog.... I haven't learnt to enjoy that bit yet haha

I've got 3 weeks off work now to recover from some minor surgery so maybe the break and lots of relaxation will help :)
