Being type 1, my health and what really grates me are false people who make themselves out to be something when their not
I've just had to have a 2nd set of bloods in a week the reasons why could not be explained so I asked for a printout,
The only reason I can see is firstly the haven't got any HbA1c results
(Stupid really being type 1) and secondly I'm not sure what this, but it's a "Serum ALT level" the reading should be (0< 40) and mine is 45 "high".
Just wanted to know if anyone could explain what it is and will it go down on its own accord. It was a fasting blood test.
Thanks

It's your liver function! I don't think it's anything to worry about too much but speak to you GP :)

Funny enough just looking it up now I'm indoors I'm not that worried as long as it means no more pills :-)

Still haven't worked out exactly what it means? And what should the average for a middle aged good looking type 1 :-) should be

I don't know either lool just have a google and if in doubt contact your GP surely if it was serious they would have called you in?

Hi jack412, I was hoping for some input from yourself, I watched the link with interest, I did start a LCHF back in January and over a few months lost 1.5 stone and a further 1/2 stone by mid August. But alas the will power just vanished and am virtually back to eating 140 to 180 cho a day luckily haven't put all the weight back on. Do the forum think this could be just a one off or if I don't take even more care of myself well I don't fancy that route (enough on my plate already so to speak)

if you're putting on weight, you know you are eating too many carbs. you don't need me to tell you that :)
how are your triglycerides... higher Trig and ALT for a fatty liver?

given you're a long term T1, I would ask your nurse, the ALT by it's self isn't something you can say what it is...but you are only a little high, you aren't that high for the serious function stuff, so I wouldn't lose sleep till it's 100

I'm still about a stone lighter than the beginning of the year so that's a positive I've not got the printout to hand at moment I'll check in morning, don't worry I won't lose sleep over "45" but I want to do my best so I'm going to try the Low Carb diet again from tomorrow.
I'm seeing the doctor next Tues but I'm going to ring the Diabetes Ctr to give me a better breakdown of the tests that were carried out as the doctors receptionists weren't able to, and I still can't believe they forgot to do the HbA1c test "Brilliant"

Can't seem to find triglycerides on the couple of pages of blood results? Would it be under a certain section ? There's so much on here or under another title that I don't recognise ?

This site gives what seems a good explanation of ALT.

http://labtestsonline.org/understanding/analytes/alt/tab/test

It does talk of ALT levels that may reach tens or hundreds of times normal in certain cases so your marginally high result does not sound too worrying but do discuss with your doctor.

I would expect triglycerides result to be in the same section as lipid profile I.e cholesterol, LDL, HDL etc

If you are on statins that is probably why they are examining your ALT a liver enzyme.

it may be shotened to TG
it should be with the cholesterol and HDL LDL

one thing when you were doing the LCHF and you went back to carbs, were you having enough fats/oils to not be hungry

Unless yuor blood test was a fasting one and the person requesting the bloods asked for a full lipid breakdown of your cholesterol then it's likely that you won't find the Trig figure, you may only find the Total Cholesterol in your print out.

Hi jack412
can't find a TG on this printout my cholesterol was 4.5 HDL 1.4 and Serum cholesterol / HDL RATIO 3.1. I am on 10mg of Atorvastatin as others have said a 45 reading that I had on ALT level is very minimal.
To your other question I was always hungry but I thought things like eggs, bacon and cheese were full of fat probably not the right sought.

But I'm very happy today since I got up this morning (5.30) I've had about (without weighing everything ) 40 carbs that was mainly two tangerines a couple of apples and some nuts, and tea tonight is chicken and salad and yoghurt. I've reduced my Basel all through the day, I've not hypo'd but I did drop to 4.0 and felt I was but had something non carb and sat down for a while and felt fine. Haven't been to hungry so far :-()

They didn't ask for a full lipid breakdown, just found out

not doing the A1c and lipids, it was a strange blood test for a diabetic, did they check your kidney?
given your past kidney stuff, you probably can't increase protein, so that only leaves fats for energy, if you reduce your carbs. low carb and low fat won't work for most people, and as you found out, you chase energy food and fall off a diet. with carbs you put the weight back on.

you are going to be starving tomorrow 40g is 160 cal and 60g protein is 240 cal total 400 calories so you needed 150g fat to have an intake of 1800 calories, which is still a weight loss amount.
do you use a food counter like my fitness pal?

I get carb cravings if I eat carbs above 50g, so for me it's either 50g or 300g, there isn't an inbetween,
if you don't get bad carb cravings...if you reduce your current carbs by 20% and raise your fats with olive oil by 20%..that might be sustainable for you? a teaspoon is a thin slice of bread...and see how your weight is in a month

or go hard core, cut the grains and potatoes ,1 piece of fruit, lots of above ground veg smothered in butter and olive oil with normal protein and a cheese platter for desert
http://www.dietdoctor.com/lchf it’s a long page and a video
http://lowcarbdiets.about.com/od/lowcarb101/a/firstweek.htm

get to the weight you want and then increase your carbs to your sensitivity level, where you don't trigger a binge

I changed tea to chicken a small jacket potato soaked in butter and sprouts covered again in butter. Going shopping tomorrow. I had type one for a long time and when I first got it it was all about CHO values so I'm not used to counting fats- calories, feels like I'm starting again :-(

What would I find the kidney results under ?

The blood test I had done yesterday include a urine test the first one I've had of those for a while
Thanks

This seems s whole new ball game
Interested to learn but worried a bit

you are going against the teachings for the last 40 years..but ADA seems to be coming around a bit
American diabetic association ( http://www.professional.diabetes.org/)

http://www.professional.diabetes.org/admin/UserFiles/0 - Sean/dc132042 FINAL.pdf

Evidence is inconclusive for an ideal amount of total fat intake for people with diabetes;
therefore, goals should be individualized; fat quality appears to be far more important than quantity.
In people with type 2 diabetes, a Mediterranean-style, MUFA-rich eating pattern may benefit
glycemic control and CVD risk factors and can therefore be recommended as an effective alternative to a lower-fat, higher-carbohydrate eating pattern.

do you have an eGFR on your list?
or you can work it out

Yes I have eGFR it reads :-

Based on Male, for Afro Caribbean multiple by 1.21
CKD Stage 1-2 if other evidence of CKD, otherwise normal

Then it gives a website address and goes on to give my liver function test

Although it has at the start of this
Serum total protein
64 g/L (60-80)

I've always been told I have to watch my protein in urine and can't eat excessive salt
