Hi, Recently been feeling extremely tired in the mornings struggling to get going. Thought i might of been having night hypos as i was waking extremely tired and very hot. Done some testing and had the following results.

8pm had evening meal with novo rapid and bs 6.8
10pm 9.8 and had usual 4 units levemir
set alarm for 3 am reading bs 7.3
woke 6.30am 7.1 (usually between 6.5- 7.5
As i was feeling particularly tired i decided to test ketones and had a reading of 0.7, i know its not extremely high but not sure if it is high enough to be of concern, particularly if its happening regularly as ithink it is on how i feel. However after my bolus and breakfast i do perk up but not till about 10am, and this has been happening regularly.

Hi Brett,

I don't think the ketones are a worry; your bloods seem stable over night and so those sorts of ketosis levels would I would think be in line with normal sleeping/fasting. There is currently a thread raging about ketosis on here and Phoenix has posted some advice on ketone levels from the drug company Abbott - they seem quite conservative to me, but in any event your levels only just get into the equation and the advice is test again.

What you might need to look at though is some sort of vitamin deficiency; have you had your thyroid, B12, or iron levels checked recently? If not might be worth a go. There is quite strong evidence that a large proportion of diabetics are B1 (thiamine) deficient

Another symptom of B1 deficiency is tiredness/weakness.

Vitamin D is also probably something you should think about.

Lastly, some people have real problems with analogue insulin - have a look here http://www.iddt.org/

And er, lastly lastly - as an alternative perhaps you are just tired and need a holiday?

Bret, I would go along with what Dillinger has already said. Just as a precaution I would test over a few more nights just to make sure last night's readings weren't a one-off, try not to do so over consecutive nights as this will make you even more tired so the weekend might be a good time to test, feeling tired is not symptom of living with diabetes so you should discuss this with your gp.

Hi Brett,

Seeing as you are a young chap too, I would also have my testosterone checked out, there is mounting evidence that both type 1 and 2s are deficient in this vital hormone. Another thing which might be worth looking at is the magnesium levels, but do check out your test, even if you are on the low end of normal it should get treated. They are not very keen to do so in this country but push for the testing at least.
