An Australian doctor isolated helicobacter pylori as a possible cause of stomach ulcers. No one believed him, so he drank a concoction of the bacteria, and promptly got an ulcer!
He then treated himself with antibiotics and lo! - the ulcer and the bacteria diappeared . Now most stomach ulcers can be treated quickly and simply with antibiotics.
Sorry - I watch 'Horizon' on BBC2, and they covered it. It was a good programme, which is why I remember it.
Hi Viv
I hope you are keeping very well.
Heroic scientific endeavour! Sometimes when you swim against the tide of "informed" opinion drastic measures are your only recourse. My contention is that we often succeed in spite of people rather than because of them. On the other hand it could be a test of our determination and rightness.
Frank Whittle and Shuji Nakamura ("inventor" of the blue LED and laser) are amongst my heroes in this respect.
ATB! 8)
May I suggest you read his biog and another related one "Not Much of an Engineer" by a chap called Sir Stanley Hooker... riveting tales of shenanigans and serendipity etc, even if you are not into planes or engineering they are inspirational.
Hope the weather is better up your way.... off to Birmingham tonight to see the Batman Show... not looking forward to the drive! 8)
