Hi all, its been 5 weeks since my referal to get a pump and I have chosen the accuk combi and cant wait. Its on order so should be able to have it put on within the next week. To be honest I'm quite scared of not understanding all the basal and bolus stuff. I'm used to giving a shot depending on the carbs and thats it. I've been type 1 for 25years and the last couple of years have been hell with my last hba1c at 13.7%, shocking! Just wanted to share my excitment of getting a pump with you guys as I dont think anyone around me realises what positive changes it will make to me (hopefully) or am I being too optimistic? I would also appreciate some advice on how hard it was understanding and adjusting your basal and bolus rates accordingly. Also does anyone know how to insure a pump without it being included in your contents insurance? Will let you know how it goes once connected. :D :D :D

Hi sugar pie

You be fine...

Its scary as yes it's a new way of looking at our diabetes with a learning curve invovled, but hey it's not quite as bad as when we were handed our first syringe, where not only did we have learn about insulin and injection, but come to terms with diabetes being part of our life as well... We just getting our heads around a new concept of insulin delivery...

Your nurses will ask you for your insulin TDD of the previous couple of days and you BG readings... They will do some number crunching so that a basic basal can be programed to work from..

As to your bolus, they will probably suggest that to start with using the standard bolus until you comfortable to try the others out... Don't expect everything to drop in place from day one, as there will be a lot of BG testing to get you basal set.. But it will all full into place, and once you settled then you will discover what bolus etc suits what situation...

A good book to get is Pumping Insulin by John Walsh, it's know as the bible amoungst pumpers, and there is always us here who can answer a question or two...

Good luck, as I already said you be fine..

I've got my pump on my household insurance and didn't have to pay any extra for it, however if you don't want to put it on your household insurance I would suggest contacing several companies to see how much they will charge. Your DN will advise you the value to insure it for.

Good luck for when you start, I've got the combo and love it.

Finally, after nearly four weeks of getting the funding for a pump I will be getting it on tuesday. I thought this day would never come! After one problem or another the date is set in stone. Looking forward to tuesday only thing worried about is that in less then 24hous of having the pump I'm at the dentist on wednesday morning for root canal treatment and obviously dont want a hypo there. Anyway lets not worry about that until the time comes, all I say is roll on tuesday, whopeeeeeeee!!!!
:P :D :P :D :P

Hi all, I've had the pump for nearly three days now and all is going really well although going far too high in the early hours and am not sure how much too change my basal rate by. I've been trying to contact the nurse and have left messages but still no reply. I'm on an hourly rate of 0.4units of novorapid but woke up at 6am with bs of 17. My bs before bed was 7. Should I increase it myself or should I wait? Before the pump it was much easier to adjust without advice! Apart from the highs in the morning after a small correction dose my bs have never been better. :D

You probably need to check what your BS are doing overnight to ensure that its not a rebound high before you change anything. I was advised to do some 2 am tests during my first week and then do some two hourly fasting tests over the next month to check my background rates. keep trying to get hold of your DN as she is the best one to advise you on how they like to do things.
