Hi im donna. Someone please try and help me. I'll try and keep this short. In december i went to docs and was sent to hospital as my BC was over 40. Was told i had type 1 diabetes. I was put on novarapid and lantas. we are now in january and i've not needed any now 16 days. why is this? i asked the hospital just to be told that they dont know. Do i have type 1 or could it be type 2? Any help with this would be great.

Hi Donna ,welcome to the forum.I'm not type one so not too sure on the answer to this but it may be what they call the 'honeymoon' period where your pancreas is still producing some insulin.I hope that a type one member will come a long and give you a better idea of the answer.

Donna

When you are first diagnosed and go on medication you sometimes kick start your pancreas to use its remaining cells to make some insulin. This is called honeymoon period and insulin requirements can drop significantly. I have heard of people being able to stop medication during this time, but they ARE still diabetic and you need to monitor and watch whats happening to be ready to start upping/taking insulin when that changes.

Even if you are type 2 you would still need to modify diet strictly to avoid the need for meds, and lots of Type 2s are on diet so it can be done. Some however are on medication, including insulin.

When you say you've not had any, was this with supervision from your medical team. Are you sugars staying mainly between 4-7 all the time, even after eating? Can you tolerate sugar? Or are you following a good diet?

If this continues and they dont think its honeymoon period then they would of course need to investigate further. You cant get to a sugar of 40 without something serious happening in your body to cause this in the first place

It would be lovely to say you dont have diabetes, but Im sorry to be harsh and say you shouldnt rule it out for ever Im afraid.

Let us know how you get on

hi. guess i have a bit of wishfull thinking going on.lol I've been told just to get on with it and work it out for myself so i stoped it on my own. i was keeping an eye on it and didn't go over 8. last night i was a bit higher and i have taken some meds today. i cant have sugar at all and i have a very good diet,i have lost a stone but i wasn't over weight to start with so im now looking ill. feeling very **** about it all and hospilal are ****!!!! sorry if i offend!!!

You're not offending ,Donna but you really need expert advice not be left to work it out yourself!!Please see your doctor as quickly as you can so that you can be helped or at least referred to some one who can help.

Agreed, it might be honeymoon or it might be something temporarily knocked out your pancreas (steroids?) if you have dropped your carbs significantly and also (if you have any) insulin resistance you may still be producing sufficient insulin yourself - FOR NOW! But if it really is Type 1 this won't last.

Have you had GAD and c-peptide tested?

Hi Donna
A BG of 40 would make T2 fairly unlikely.
