Received my copy of Dr. John Briffa's 'Escape the diet trap' today. Just been leafing through and this caught my eye:

pp198 Table 8 Summary of food recommendations

Under the column headed FOODS TO AVOID it reads 'soya milk and soya products based on TVP and SPI'.

As I now have the occasional soya and linseed Burgen slice or protein roll and my family enjoy the Alpro soy puds I wanted to know why Dr. Briffa puts this on his list. I havn't read anywhere else that soya should be avoided. Any clarification would be appreciated.

Can’t help with your question, but out of curiosity what are TVP and SPI?

Textured Vegetable Protein and Protein Solubility Index. I had to look it up but I'm none the wiser.

TVP is a dried soya product used a lot for vegetarian cooking prior to Quorn products.

Certainly still available, but I no longer use it. as if I want that kind of minced meat texture or I'm cooking for more than just me, I use Quorn mince. The one I used to use was a TVP mince and needed rehydrating before cooking.

Do you know why the Doctor recommends that it should be avoided?

I was advised by my doctor to avoid all soy products. With PCOS my body already has hormonal issues. She mentioned that soy can mess with hormones. Not sure of the science, maybe someone on the forum knows more.
