Spike in sugar level after big meal

Hi, I'm 33 and have lived with Diabetes for 16 years. I use Humalog and Glargine insulins, my control is very good and I have had no complications thus far.

However, if I have a large, carbohydrate rich meal, such as a Chinese or Indian I find that my blood sugar spikes to a high level throughout the night and the only way I can manage things are by checking my sugar level and injecting, which is a bit of a pain.

I asked my doctor what can be done to prevent this spike and he suggested increasing my Glargine on the day I have the larger meal, I've tried that but the increased dose doesn't work straight away, it takes a few days before the higher dose will take effect.

My doctor suggested seeing a dietician but I'm not sure how that will help me. I mentioned about using a mid-acting insulin but he didn't think that was a good idea.

This is something that's been going on for as long as I can remember and would love some help and advice.

Regards
Ian

A mid-acting insulin would be an option, most of us split-dose for such meals, meaning you bolus some upfront and inject the rest 2-4 hours later depending on your bg levels and own experience, it's mainly due to the high fat content of the meal.

Its the LARGE meal causing the problem, try eating he same thing but in a smaller amount, just because your plate is piled high with rice, doesn't mean you have to eat it

Cheers for the comments. I need to point out that I don't eat meals like this often but you can't let diabetes rule your life so it's inevitable that I'll eat a big, high carb meal from time to time.
